North Dublin Aerials...

Could someone tell me what TX all those vertically polarised High Gain UHF aerials in North Dublin are pointing at? Surely not Divis as that's Horizontally polarised, and surely not Arfon as the aerials are pointing North?

I would have thought those huge rigs would be unnecessary for Clermont Carn, which is of course vertically polarised...

The aerials which you refer to are receiving UK signals from the Kilkeel transposer which is situated atop Aughrim Hill, about 3m NW of Kilkeel village. It has an erp of 500w and operates on Chs 39, 42, 45 and 49. There's a good sea path from north Co. Dublin and it gives more reliable reception than Divis which has to pass over the Mourne Mts. Kilkeel is used all along the Eat Coast from SE Dublin as far north as Dundalk.

Blimey! that must be a record for long distance reception, especially when the TX is at such a low power.

I have some friends in Dalkey using that relay-they're quite high-almost in Kiliney-They get fair reception using only a grid!
Last time I was there I was going to play with it and put them on Arfon:D
I reckon friendships would have been strained a bit when they got a load of s4c-so I didn't!

Incidently Marconi-have seen high gain aerials around Ashbourne pointing northwestish- are they on Brougher?

Yes, Madman - if they're facing NW then you can be sure it's Brougher Mt. Signals from Divis in the Ashbourne area can be a bit dodgy for some because of the Mourne and Cooley Mountains, so some installers use Brougher instead. Also. the Ashbourne area is too far inland for reception of Kilkeel.

My antennae point to Kilkeel from my home in Swords. The BBC and Utv signals are quite good. Can I recieve digital signals from Kilkeel? I live up on a hill and can see the Mournes and Irish Sea (Lambay) from my attic. Also do I need a special digital signal antennae. Thanks in advance.. :)

Kilkeel doesn't have any Digital Terrestial TV transmissions at the moment. So the answer is no.
