I discovered this year that Boards.ie was no longer assessable from the I.T. room.
Every time I tried to get onto the site the Websence kicked in and blocked it.
I wrote an e-mail to complain and this was the response…

    “Dear david

I'm sorry I have taken so long to answer your email. I wanted to
discuss the this particular site with a colleague before I replied to you.

Although we agree that there is some serious content in 'boards.ie', it
is outside our definition of an academic site so we are unable to
    remove Websense from it.

However if you wish to ask someone like Adrian Dobson or Alan
Lamont to look at the site and recommend it as a serious arrchitectural
resource then please do so and ask them to contact me on your behalf.

I should like you also to make an appointment to see me sometime so
that I can make sure you are aware of all the information resources
available to you as a student at Luton.

I am preparing a new printed guide to resources, both printed and
electronic, and I am also developing web pages which will guide you
to the resources relevant to your architecture studies. There may be
ways in which I can help you use the Internet.

If you would like to talk to me, the best time would be around the
    middle of September or later.

    It's entirely up to you.

    regards

    Joan”

Do any of your collages have such a strict censorship policy on the net?

P.S. I now access this site through the psychology intranet room (my girlfriend studies psychology) as there websence is a lot less stric due to the nature of the resurch they have to do.

UCD dont anyway- evidenced fromt the fact I'm writing this from belfield.

Sounds a bit unfair alright. Why dont you just point out to them the college work board is a serious resource and reference point for academic info. Although in its infancy, we have alredday seen various academic issues raised and debated.

My heart goes out to you Doc:(

I'd doubt they'd see the College Work board as a serious resource and reference point for academic info if people like irishguy don't stop posting and asking people to do their work for them! In fact this would almost certainly be another reason not to allow access to Boards.

The College Work board could be really great but it needs to be moderated fast.

Thankfully I can access Boards from college but some sites (including the website of a lecturer here) are banned and I have to use Safeweb or slimey to get at them.

    Try using the address:

    http://216.247.239.48

    or else try using www.anonymizer.com

edit: That first URL doesn't work, they must be using host headers.

DIT Kevin St. maths1 server blocks nearly nothing - they put in a firewall but all it seens to do is act as a ip mascarade (i can't spell the word) - it blocks napster and irc (not any other chat or transfer clients i tried) - webpages are totally unfiltered except by norton anti-virus which objects to some dodgy warez sitez.

I don't see why other colleges block content - it can't be to stop you wasting time (the pub can do that much worse) or resouces (we have a 10meg atm - it's never above 40% capacity)

The only scary big-brother thing here is VNC which allows the admin to monitor in realtime what's on our screens (and visa versa if you know how :-)

Here in Carlow IT, not very much is blocked out. You're supposed to use the computers for academic purposes only, but nearly everyone here in the library is just messing about online. They do firewall out stuff like napster and other file sharing programs, as well as IRC... though not very well, as their HTTP proxy allows you to connect through it with mIRC :)

Yea, Ccad blocks out IRC and any other chat things, but as far as web pages are concerned they dont care. Jave stuff doesn't really work too well either.

DCU don't block anything that i'm aware of, tho my faculty have starting spying on us. They [well one person] are trying to stop ppl from using the network to d'load games/mp3;s etc... basically academic purposes only.

Although it prob is in most colleges AUP's that the computing resources are for academic purposes only and most ppl don't pay attention to that.

dliadt blocks every other port except the http one. its a bit sad going alright, but that doesnt stop students from accessing dubious amount of pr0n over their hotmail account. other then that, i have no complaints although monday mornings will never be the same again. ;)

My heart goes out to you! DCU have got nothin(or very little blocked) although they can spy on you! The only thing that i have found blocked is irc and i got round that:)

Mr Applepie, you should never admit these things until after you've left college.... you never know who'll read this.

I never told anyone I cracked the Administrator password on all the NT machines in DIT Bolton Street in 5 mins. Here's a hint - have a look at the name of the monitor

I'm in NUI,Galway here no web content is blocked/moderated. You can download anything you want (the only problem is where to put it). People have been known to *cough* look at porn using their own fully traceable accounts without any reprimands.

The majority of the PC's on campus don't allow you to install any software that directly affects the local system but there are PC's where you have a bit more freedom. And of course there is *cough* the occasional network game of CS or HL played on campus.

There is a firewall preventing people from using Audiogalaxy, Napster, etc.

You can IRC internally and we have an IRC server running on a server in the college but you cannot IRC out directly (but http-tunnel works).

People have been known to get netsends though informing them that they had been caught looking at porn, and requesting them to report to the administrators' office. The said administrator would not have a clue as to what they were talking about.

tcd don't seem to block anything - I know that they do monitor whats coming down though - p0rn is ignored, but kidde porn (there was an instance last year i think) is stamped on. I had heard that the monitor was turned off due to delay problems

when i started my masters i was told that it was a considered impolite to play networked games before 5 :)

UCC varies from lab to lab according to who admins it. The computer science labs won't allow you to run anything downloaded, or any java applets with certain purposes.

On the other hand, the maths lab allows you free access with no firewall. But theres very few accounts and they know you individually, it isn't open access as such, swipe carded lab and all that.

All sms sites blocked. Why??? cause their eeeejets

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,569 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

Sms sites are blocked because they consider it a rather large and unnecessary use of bandwidth. Which I wholeheartedly agree with. If muppets are sending Sms messages how am I supposed to dl. 'Sides their are ways around these things.

As for them being eejits, I'd have to disagree.

Also, I thought I'd found everyone from boards going to Carlow IT.

Look me up, Ciarán in the Compsoc wednesday nights in Lab 311 in the LRC or some room. Just look for the room with obscene phrases coming from it.
