I know there's been a rake of 'Best...' in the Films Board but try this one for size.

Anyway, a favourtie would be from Die Hard 2 - marine guy gets sucked into the engine intake of a 747, ouch :)

I'd say one of the best death sequences is in Platoon, when Willem Dafoes(?) character gets killed.

Or, sticking with the same genre, the final "diddy mao" scene in The Deer Hunter. Very powerful stuff.

Rutger Hauer in the original Buffy has to be one of my favourites, for its ludicrousness.

Alternately, the entire tomb-scene in Baz Lehrman's Romeo and Juliet for pure quality.

William DaFoe's death in Platoon DEFINITELy ranks up there as one of the highest in my opinion. At once very powerful, and also instantly recognisable as being that film.

Die Hard one isn't bad ... with whats-his-name falling to his death. The best part is the sickening *Thud* that you hear when he hits the ground .. hehehe

The T-1000 in Terminator 2 .. that death scene was pretty f-*cked up when he just starts melting all over the shop

All of them in "The Way of the Gun" (2000), but especially the old guy in the car near the Mexican brothel.

    2 spring to mind:
Grosse Point Blank, where Dan Arkyrod dies on telly :)
    or
at the end of Gladiator, when Maximus was dying in the arena.

    Ronnie Cox in Total Recall.

The double death of Leon & Stansfield at the end of LEON.
    Talk about a death scene.

Or Ripley's Death in Alien 3. Totaly under-rated in my mind.

Terminator 2 - death of the T1000, liquid nitrogen, pistol, 'hasta la vista, baby'... awww classic :D
Also the end where the T101 lowers into the molten metal *sobb* :(

The end of Saving private Ryan... death of Tom Hanks charictor... some very nice camera work there... slow, fading, dream-like.

Young Guns 2 - Where Billy and the gang are trapped in that ruin of a house... Doc sacrifices himself for his 'pals' by going out shooting while the rest escape... "let's finish the game..."

So many great ones, but that's all I can think of for now.

The "second in command" vampire in the Buffy Film - after all the credits it goes back to him still "oooooohing and aaaahing" with a stake in his chest - absolutly mental - totally daft.

That or Tyler's death in Fight Club - you knew it was coming, but you didn't expect it that way!

a bunch of deaths from Battle Royale is quite cool, the ones i can remember are the knife in the head, the exploding neck bracelet or the pure carnage of the tmp killing students. nice.

    Roy Batty in Blade Runner:

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe
Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion
I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate
All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.
    Time... to die."

Apologies for nominating an arguably pretentious load of twaddle but the last scene in Godard's Pierrot Le Fou is pretty funny. The lead male, Ferdinand, after knocking off his girlfriend, decides to paint his head blue and wrap several sticks of dynamite around his head. He lights the fuse, realises that he doesn't actually want to have his head blown to a squillion pieces and tries to extinguish the fuse but to no avail - KABOOM - we hear the explosion but don't see it, thank goodness. A ridiculous ending to a ridiculous movie.

Goodfellas.......joe pesci knifing yer man in boot of the car when hes tied up inside a sack.

Some quere realistic sound effects, made me wince anyway.

Just remembered a few more ....

the death of that black guy in "American History X" - anyone who has seen that film knows EXACTLY which sequence I'm talking about. The sound is the worst part - that sickening *crunch* - gives me shivers everytime I think about it

Also .. that guy that gets the ball to the face in "RollerBall". Actually .. that film has several classic deaths in it (well .. one of them isn't a death per-se but he gets reduced to the level of cabbage)

"Hamburger Hill" - the vietnamese guy that gets his head disintegrated by an M60 at point-blank range.

Unicron's death sequence in "Transformers:the movie" (I am SUCH a kid at heart :D)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 898 ✭✭✭Winning Hand

    Definately the blade runner scene.
    Also:
    Dogma (In the bus)
Matt Damon : Excuse me sir, are you married
Guy (sticks up his ring finger): YEAH
    Matt: Is she your wife?
    Guy: NO
Matt blows the guys head off with the desert eagle

Speaking of desert eagles, boris's death in Snatch

Short Circuit: How can man be so cruel to machines.

All the main characters deaths in Usual Suspects. 'Strangest thing............'

Bridget Fondas death in Jackie Brown.

Theres loads if you think about it

The scene in Buffy that they said before with the guy taking ages to die it's cool.
Finally someone actually knows the film the Lost Boys. No one I talk to seems to.

Hmmm .... anyone remember the final sequence in "Titus"??? Where 3 main characters get killed in the space of 2 mins.

Anthony Hopkins kills the evil queen in revenge, then her sap of a husband kills hopkins, then andrew mcFadden sticks a knife or something (could bea spoon) into the king, and whislt he's convulsing, pulls out a pistol and blows his brains out

    OR

The general getting splatted by a flying bug in "StarShip troopers" ...

"Oh my GOD!!! We're all gonna die! We're all gonna d...*SPLAT*" :D

The German sniper in saving private ryan. Its a one in a million shot but still Gerry lost and eye and most of his brains. Some of the guys on the beach in saving private ryan aswell the guy getting dragged along harrowing stuff. The candyman in candyman 1 is a good ending

How about reservoir dogs, it certainly must count as one of the longest, since more or less the whole movie is just one big long death scene :)

A really good death sequence isn't about blood, gore and splatters... it's about how believable the scene, character and acting is.

In this respect, the best 'death scene' I can recall has to be from the Abyss. The male and female leads are trapped in a sub deep below, rapidly filling with water, and only one oxygen tank remains.

The decision is taken to allow the female lead to die by drowning, based on the concept that the water is so cold that she will freeze, and as long as the male character can drag her frozen body back to base in time, there might be some chance of reviving her. The argument leading to this decision is a pure tension builder.. and superbly built. He is the better swimmer, so logically she should be the one to die.

That scene where the two characters stare at each other, one wearing facemask, oxy tank and gear.. the other desperately holding her breath as the water fills the sub and the air pocket is expunged, until at the last gasp she drowns, slowly, ugly and nasty.

It has to be one of the best 'death scenes' I've ever seen, because there is no blood, no mad explosions, no crazy crap at all.. just an ex-husband and ex-wife staring at each other as one of them dies by drowing inches away from the other... twitching...

If you haven't seen this film.. get it. You will not be dissappointed.

The Abyss, directed by James Cameron.

ouch ouch ouch. Love the deathscenes that make your knees ache. You know the kind.

American History X, someone mentioned it already. Eat the curb. How painful must that be? So painful to watch. I remember the first time I watched that, I hadn't heard about that scene. So real, still sick.

Joe Pesci seems to get great death scenes. Remember Casino? Ouch again. That's a bone breaker for ya.

My all time fave has to be John Travolta (Vince) in Pulp Fiction. Main character throughout the film, then suddenly, bam, he gets shot walking out of a toilet. Brutal or what.

    Best death ever!

Dr. Strangelove. riding the bomb out of the plane. classic!

Platoon is good, but I think overplayed.

What about the death of Kevin Costner in "A Perfect World"? Quite good, I think.

Coyote is right on. The Abyss scene is bloody good.

Lindsey: You got the suit on and you're a much better swimmer than I am, right!?
    Bud: Yeah, maybe. But...
Lindsey: Right? Yes! I got a plan.
    Bud: What plan?
Lindsey: I drown, you tow me back to the rig...
    Bud: No... No, No!
Lindsey: Yes. This water is only a couple of degrees above freezing. I go into deep hypothermia... My blood go like icewater. My bodysystems will slow down, they won't stop!

    Classic stuff.....
