    Well as the thread states....

Why wont the much heralded XP work w/ €ircoms ADSL product??
I haven't really heard much about XP except the usual m$ hype, but I read this in the e-commerce section in the Independants Business Section on Thurs.

Is this lack of foresight by €ircom or wot?
    Me confused:confused:

    whered you get that from?

    ISP - Doesnt matter!
ADSL - piece of equiptment and line
    XP - Operating system

All you need is the correct windows XP drivers for your ADSL equiptment and away you go. In fact, if it worked on Win9x/me/ win2k, then im nearly 100% sure that the drivers will work for XP. It has sweet FA to do with your isp.

that looks like bad journalism tbh. They are speaking about DSL as if Eircom developed and own it :/
I seriously doubt XP wont work with pppoe.

BUt Eircom *could* say that "we are delaying the launch of ADSL so that we can ensure full compatability with WIndows XP...which is just out so it wasn't our fault".

Most likely it's due to absent or non-working drivers for the USB DSL router/modem device that Eircom use.

    Folks,
PPPoE is supported natively in Windows XP - no need for Enternet/RESPPPoE or whatever.
    See http://www.carricksolutions.com/windowspppoe.htm#34 for further details.
You can still use RASPPoE of course - see http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/

As regards that Alcatel modems, the only one of relevance to the OS being used is the SpeedTouch USB - download Win XP upgrade from http://www.alcatel.com/consumer/dsl/supuser.htm

    Thread finished.
    MK.

The software Eircom supply is just a pretty frontend for Enternet; designed for your average peon user, it's all just marketing really.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if what the independant "technology journalist" was talking about was the incompatibility of this particular piece of software with Windows XP; since it was probably written before XP was released.

This is the case with some of IOL's disks afaik, they won't run on Windows ME or MacOS.

Maybe this is someone in "Independant Media" (hah - lets put that in the humour section) being a sea lawyer?

That is extreamly bad journalism. And coming from the Irish Independant too!! Rubbish.

Its funny how I how a sh1t load of gamers I know have Windows XP and are running pppoe with their ISP's and are still able to connect.
