Making music... where do I start?

I'm looking to start making some music on my Mac. I've messed around with a couple of basic sound editing programs such as sound forge and sound edit, and built up tracks based on loops recorded from various album tracks, but i want to go a little further and develop complete tracks maybe with vocals. The trouble is that I havent got a clue where to look, or what to do. I've heard about Cubase but havent gone near it. Does anybody know of any good websites or magazines that might point me in the right direction.

    Help appreciated.

I make computer music, albiet on a PC (hiss!,boo!)
and the magazine that held my hand is called
Computer Music, the next issue is out Thursday
    Oct 25.
Also look out for Future Music though this
    tends to concentrate on Hardware.

    Go here www.computermusic.co.uk
    and check out www.computer-music.co.uk
BTW these are two different sites!

    Mike.

As a mac user for years and someone whos set up a few home music systems ill tell ye this - Cubase is king :)
Cubase VST is next to nothing (it comes free in a lot of packages) so thats not really a worry.
What you need to really make decent music is 3 things.
    Software - Cubase is great
    Keyboard - obvious reasons
Sequencer- You can get software sequencers but hardware ones are the best way to go i think (im open to correction here:) )
A midi bank and some sort of four track/mini disc/cd-r would help too.

Cubase is cool but for now I think this is what you want - Pro-tools is a professional recording media also. You have very good audio editing and effects capabilities. You can also have MIDI editing, 64 channels I think. It is very expensive but you can download a lesser version (I have it and it is great for audio) [altho it has no reverb]

http://www.digidesign.com/ = Pro Tools FREE to download

Otherwise if you want to pay and get some effects - cubase audio for recording audio stuff inot your Mac or Digital Performer (I have that too and it is great for audio but better for MIDI).
    http://www.motu.com/english/software/dp/body.html for example.

I use an iMac, it may help to get more memory if you are wanting many tracks of audio to play back. (memory is cheap right now for Macs) if there is anything you need to know about Mac and Mac music I may be able to help. PM me if you want to contact me.

For now though outaline definately download yourself a copy of Pro-tools free it's free!! and then get the feel of using your Mac with music and MIDI. You can then decide if there is anything out there that you wish to spend money on.

protools protools ProTools PROTOOLS Pro Tools ROCKS!
