Whos about bring some life to this board? :)

Why don't we setup and run a PC based wargame tourney.

Firstly, what we would need would be a game that everyone has or can obtain freely over the net, plenty of good free wargames out there, plus many good abandonware ones (no warez).

There'd be 2 methods of playing the games, either online or PBM, the PBM would prolly work best, as it saves organising game times, you can play yer turns whenever you had time.

Just firing out ideas, if enough are interested, we could track down some games and give it a go.

I'd be up for it ButcherOfNog.

<Flashback to secondary school playing planets and everyone bringing in floppies with their turns on it. Ahh those were the days.>

Here's a quick link that I had somewhere on my HD.
    http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/pbm_list/wargame.html

Tis a list of PBM wargames along with brief descriptions. Might be worth a look as I don't know any by reputation.

If we're gonna do online wargames - might I recommend Final Liberation (SSI Online - Games Workshop). I dunno how it plays online mind.

Or one of those Panzer General / Close Combat games?

the close combat ones are good, but they're realtime, which means getting 2 people online at the same time, afaik the panzer general ones have a play by email option, that would prolly be the best way to play this i'd say.

Hmm, I'd prefer this option meself, and yes it has a pbm option. The problem is it won't run on my new(ish) PC, it'll only run on my old 486. Which doesn't have an internet connection. Allied General perhaps??

Also what about a web-based game? Some of us at college can't bring games in onto the PC's, so it could be a problem :(

the problem with browser based games is that, well, any of the wargames i've seen are either mpog ones, or v crap ones, and anyways, we'd end up with scum from the webgames board in here, bitching about casinos or somesuch twaddle :)

ok, so pbm then. feel free to throw up yer personal choices here, these are the few that i know of that are available FOC:

    Hex style:
    Pacific general
    Allied general
Steel Panthers WAW (prolly the best of the bunch, freeware, but 400M download, I'm playing single player campaigns atm)

    Squad based:
Incubation (great game in its time, up to 4 players pbm supported)

    High Level Strategy:
Machiavelli The Prince (pbm support afaik)

any others? theres bound to be other Hex based ones that pbm.

I'd vote Allied General, could ya put up a few links for the downloads pls :) ?

High level strategy would be nice too, maybe we could try and run both at once to cater for both tastes?

    http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?id=1591

a massive 11MB download, the manual is an extra 1M :)

i always preferred Pacific General tho, think it was the mix of ground/air/sea units that led to some great battles (i always enjoyed sinking aircraft carriers)
