I think Dun Laogahire Institute of Art, Design and Technology has a film course. I don't really have much information on it. But i know one of my mates was considering doing before he chose what he's doing now. Anyway their website is http://www.iadt-dl.ie/.

    Good luck,

if u are anyway into media, ballyfermot college www.bcfe.ie has one of the best reps in ireland and holds one of the worlds best annimation and multimedia dept......also the multimedia dept is on Dame st, so u dont even have to go out to ballyfermot?

dunlaoire is ok,but it goes on that stupid points system, in BCFE u prove urself by you own talent like u have an interview and have to take a portfolio, it is a real hard college to get into, well the annimation/media/art depts

i plan to go to BCFE after i finish in UCD next year

if its the media area u want to get into, u should go there,it does hold a great rep

If you can affored it Id look at English courses too if I where you.

It might seem a bit daunting leving Ireland but Ive done it and have no regrets. ;)

You also will have a much larger selection of courses.

One of my housemates in Galway last year was doing some sort of film studies with a view to becoming a director.

He told me he picked it as the best place in the country because they have some hardware it's impossible to get anywhere else due to expense.

That said, I haven't a clue about it meself.

Dun laoghaire is supposed to be good for film...
Also DIT have started a new Media Arts course which is a newer version of their Communication:Film and broadcasting course... I know that was supposed to be an excellent course

Not just a standard communications degree.

Most of the specialize in film/radio/photography or something similar AFAIK, after a year or two.

DCU and DIT do course i think.

I was looking at a few in America in England, just it sometimes hard to figure out which ones would be the best if you have the intention of going for film directing etc etc. (Cant believe I've gotta make these choices *sniff* I WANNA BE A KID AGAIN!)

Probably the best film course is at DIT Augnier Street (www.dit.ie), and as other people pointed out, there's one at Dun Laoghaire (DLCAD).

DLCAD takes in very few people each year, despite the recent extensions, but they do filmmaking, editing right through to a course in prosthetics and make-up. You can get into it through the CAO but you need a portfolio too. I presume Post Grad is an option too.

UCD runs a film faculty too (www.ucd.ie/~film) and it has a practical side but since it was founded by Gregory Peck and a philosophy lecturer, it's pretty theory based - but that's cool if you like that sort of thing. I know someone doing the course and let's say the hours are minimal but it's only post gfad. All the same, UCD has a FilmSoc that lets you make films if you have ideas - nice equipment for a society and they're nice guys all in all. It's better than nothing.

Then there's various courses in London (London Scool of Film in Covent Garden is great but costs £20,000 to go there I think) but there's a cheaper one somewhere near the suburbs.

The DIT course is the best one all-round - practical, theoretical and you get to specialise and their equipment is second to none for this country.

Dun Laoghaire is not the best film college in Ireland. It is the best video/digital college in Ireland. If you want to stay in Ireland go to ballyfermot. Fair enough it is a kip of a place but trust me it is the best for creative courses. DIT is more a technical based course. But if you really want the best, check out english courses much to the dislike of me I'm over here In Cumbria college of art and design and it has one of the best media production courses in the country (takes in all aspects of film/video/production.) Their web address is http://www.cumbriacad.ac.uk/

the bunch of u are muppits

IADT - Dun Laoghire. Is THE National Film School. They get all the big speakers, Oliver Stone gave a lecture when Alexander was being premiered for example.

Its a 4 Year Degree course, so do a little math. You go in and there are 3 years above u, 24 students in a class so thats immediatly 72 ppl ahead of u doing film. Then theres ur class of 24 like minded ppl and when u graduate 3 class's below u all with 24 - thats atleast 150 ppl doing film and brushing elbows with u while ur in there.

a huge part of Film School is making contacts - who u know then are there will be the ppl who give u favers, lend u money, write, direct, know someone, or edit ur films in future.

You just don't get that in Ballyfermot. Granted its number 2, the 2nd best course in Ireland - not like thats saying a whole lot, but seriously don't go bad mouthing IADT just cus its a CAO course, I got 600 out of 600 in the interview and portfolio meaning I only needed 280 on the LC, if ur talented - they want u - and if ur not. U dont get in.

if u couldn't get 280, u deserve basket making in ucd.

no offence but why are u asking advice on good film school's on this website anyway?

IADT and Ballyformott- best 2 in Ireland

Beaconsfield is the National Film School in the UK, and Edinburugh Uni also has a great course.

Don't be so lazy, do some research ask people. go to open days, look at portfolios etc..

if u want to get into any film school u need a good portfolio, prefferably show caseing film work.

At least these "muppits" as you so eloquently put it, didn't drag up a four year old post.

Thats great... but it doesn't stop the 4 year old posts being uninformed and stupid - I was simply setting the record straight.

and as for you tom since you decided it would be nice to stir something - I'll say this - I'm a new member to this site, I posted on this thread with my opinions I didn't take a moment to look at the date. and who really cares? My points came across just as clear regardless of how old the initial conversation was.

At first I was impressed with the wide variety of topics in which I could post on this website - I now realize most of which are as dead as a door nail.

60% of the boards on boards.ie are out dated and lacking in recent conversations. There just isn't enough people in the country with internet accsess to accomdate such a diverse website.

and tom - dont condescend to people its not nice.

calling people muppits when its deserved is another matter all together.
