GW: Special Characters in games...

Just following up on something Digi_Tilmitt had posted:
a lot of my army is made up of Special people.
Now, I'm not a fan of Speshul Karacters :) in games (the points can be better spend I think).

How many of you find themselves using them in armies? Do you find they have much of an impact?

The way I see it is this:
You're not allowed them in tournaments and competitons, so why practice with them full time? They're fun to add into an army for a one-off or a scenario you've created yourself, but if given the choice between 2 squads of Guardians and a regular farseer or 1 squad and Eldrad Ulthran, I know where I'm gonna be spending the points!

A special character is precisly that! They have no business being a regular part of an army less than 5000 points - think about it. They're not going to be off fighting in small little 1500 point skirmishes when there's a planetary war on! They're gonna be at the front lines where the fighting's thickest (unless they're a skirmish/small scale specialist like the Rambo type in Codex Catachan). They also attract so much attention and on a small scale, you can't really afford to loose such a points investment to a stray heavy weapons shot - I have no problem letting rip with bright lances or rail guns at a force commander/whatever - I want him dead and I want those victory points!

    Thoughts/opinions?

I dunno...back in the old days of 40k. I used have use one team of veteran assualt troopers and the rest special characthers (Blood Angels) + a few extras. Dante and Mephisto whomped all around them. :D

Never use Special Characters normally, although the models are excellent!

I find them at their best when both sides are limited to 1 as a general, for a 3000+ game. That way they can give some more character, but generally cancel each other out if you put a points restriction on the character, 500 pts or somesuch.

Also, I absolutely hate these personal custom-made special characters that just happen to exactly fill the gaps in a player's army!
