i think they are wonderful. it is an alternative to getting British terrestrials from Chorus who would be my only other alternative. sure Sky have BBC 1 and 2 but do they give us Channel 4, ITV or S4C. no, no and no. deflector systems do. they are a great thing

Agreed on the deflector-as long as you get a good signal, but generally you will have no stereo sound,so when you hear Buffy squealing on Sky one-its not what you think...:D
Its actually noise on the signal from the deflector!

Seriously though as I've posted elsewhere,I have ITV digital and am very impressed with the sound quality on that.
Because of the signal strengths on Irish DTT when it arrives,I will lose itv digital-But from reading these boards and elsewhere, when Irish DTT starts it will be picked up with just an indoor aerial.
Things appear to move so slow in this country-But I'd love to see what would happen(to the likes of NTL and Chorus especially), if a service like that was launched.
Imagine living in Dublin or Cork (and previously only access to cable or sky) and all you literally have to do is plug in a box with an indoor aerial and get the same if not more?

I hate s4c it drives me up the wall it really does maybe its one of the few reasons why i have mmds chorus.

(note Rebel18 is not employed by chorus he is only a pissed off subscriber to the shabby mmds anologue system)

    Sooooo,

Can someone clarify this for me ...
Over the next while when all channels go Digital (RTE, TV3 etc.) they will be broadcast through this DTT system ?

This DTT system works similar to the present Deflector system of bouncing signals all over the country ?

And you will be able to receive all these Satellite channels through a basic set top arial on your TV ?

When will all this happen ?
I believe all channels must broadcast through Satellite by 2002 ?

    Thanks ...
    Giz.

At the moment theres no info regarding which company that will bring digital tv through an aerial.
And as for complete anologue shutdown not for at least another 20 years.

they don't have to. it is up to the broadcasters themselves whether or not they make their services available on satellite

    Reply to gismo:

An irish DTT system will be legal, offering digital tv( digital meaning many things, but especially much more channels) through your aerial.
It has nothing at all to do with deflectors which are nothing more than a stop gap way of providing a very few extra UK channels-albeit a very good stopgap for those that could not get anything other than RTE without them. and up untill recently were illegal . It will be broadcast via the main transmitters currently transmitting RTE and TV3 etc.
I do not know when it might start except to say on this site we've been told that its at tender stage and a decision as to who is going to run the service rests with the government and regulator etc.
Analog shutdown is supposed to happen in Britain in ten years or so-but who knows?

All channels being broadcast via sattelite by 2002-theres more chance of a Volcano eruption in Abbey dorney
    mm:rolleyes:

    yes
This DTT system works similar to the present Deflector system of bouncing signals all over the country ?
DTT will use the transmitters currently broadcasting RTÉ

no. only the ones that want to broadcast on DTT. it is also down to space on the DTT system. so it will be down to whoever will be running the DTT system in Ireland. if i am wrong i am sure someone will correct me
When will all this happen ?
    sometime next year apparently

At this point I should point out that deflectors are required under their licences to close down if and when an Irish DTT transmitter opens in their area. Its'TV will probably be the company providing the service - you'll have news of this on ICDG when it breaks.

You will have to pay to recieve UK channels on DTT - the only channels that will be free will be RTE, TV3, TG4, the proposed extra RTE channels, and the proposed Oireachtas channel. In any case, you will have to pay for a STB which may be subsidised on condition of you subscribing to a pay-TV package. Unsubsidised STBs will likely cost approx £400 initally.

At this stage I'm considering moving this thread to the DTT forum, but lets see how the discussion goes...
