Can't really recommend anywhere - I stayed with a friend when I was there last year. I get the impression that even hostels will cost you $50-100 a night and there isn't many of them. Hotels (ordinary) will cost you $100-200 per night.

HOWEVER, given the current downturn in travel in the US, you can get seom good deals a quick search of www.yahoo.com http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/chkrates?SID=Y10&Dest=NYC&LKF=Y10&PROD=HOTEL gives some Manhatten hotels for as low as $75 (I don't know if this is per room or per person - extra person charges may apply) for a one star (not great) or $125 for three star (fairly good). Be aware that sales tax is extra at about 8%-12%.

Expect to pay for practically everything 'optional' that we would consider included. Bring a friend. Stay New Years for the celebrations in Times Square.

Oh yeah, try student residences and the like or apartments, rented by the week.
