Image compression techniques

Anybody know of any good resources for image compression techniques?

I'd like to find out more about GIFs and JPEGs in particular. Is it possible to read these types of files into a matrix and manipulate them from there?

What I want to do is read the file in as a matrix (or whatever really) fiddle about with it a bit, write the matrix to a text file, and then be able to generate the image again from that text file.

    Anybody got any ideas?

    Thanks

Do a search on the net. PNG is probably better to use.

Might help if you explain better what you want to do. Why do you need to use JPG?
