I will be heading to Amsterdam towards the end of the month for a "lads weekend".
Can anyone recommend a decent well priced (read cheap) central hotel ?
I have been there twice before but both lodging experiences were not worth remembering (hostel and prison like hotel).

whats wrong with a hostel for a lads weekend? you save money to spend on other things, and I mean its not as if youll be sitting around the room all day either (or night for that matter).
girls i can imagine wanting something halfdecent, but like can you seriously say that you'll be wanting breakfast in bed and mints on your pillows for the two nights that you'll be there?

cheapest seems to be about £23 pp (twin rooms)

    includes breakfast

i'm also going for a lads weekend to Amsterdam at the end of the month, i think we're going to stay in the Flying Pig hostel in Downtown amsterdam.

What sort of museums are in Amsterdam, any other sites worth seeing?

People don't usually go to Amsterdam for a cultural experience, I do know of two museums though:

    The sex museum
    and
    The hash museum

    I'm serious.

If you like parks I can recommend the Vondel Park (longish walk or take the tram), it's like a bigger version of Stephens Green in Dublin plus it has a section in the middle where they keep animals (goats, chickens, ducks that type of thing).

The Rijksmuseum and the van Gogh museum. Both of these are near to each other. The Rijksmuseum is worth going to just to look at the architecture of the building and the large grassy plaza behind it, even if you don't go inside.

The NEMO science museum, loacted approx 15 mins walk east of Central Station is worth the trip. The building was built a few years ago by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. It is located next to the waterfront and above the entrace of a road tunnel, and looks like a big green ship that is about to sail into the water, it's an incredible building. You can walk up to the top of it and get a good view of Amsterdam harbour. And the museum inside is interesting enough as well.

If you are a gambler, Holland Casino is near Leidseplein and is worth the visit. And if you are not a gambler, you can go there on Wedsnesdays and get in for free and get a coupon for a free drink. And after that you can walk out, without having gambled a penny!

Take a visit to the Waterlooplein flea market, all sorts of interesting things can be bought there for cheap. It's open six days a week, only I don't know which six days those are...

For a good pint/music you should go to Mulligans, number 100 on the River Amstel. It's one of the only Irish pubs in town that's not likely to be filled with rowdy English football supporters.

If you want to eat at a very interesting restaurant, try the Supperclub lounge restaurant.

"De Magere Brug" is worth a visit, either by day, or especially by night, when it is lit up. It's like the Hapenny Bridge, but then 100 times better.

You could of course do what the other 90% of drunken tourists in Amsterdam do, and visit the cheesy sex museums and coffeeshops, and eat at restaurants along Damrak and Leidsestraat and Leidseplein, who only want to rip you off, but my advice is not to do any of that. There, I've said it.

And the best way to get around and explore the city is by bike! The trams are slow as ****e!
