Does anyone know if and when TV3 will be available on Sky Digital as I live in North Derry & cant pick up TV3 even though I have perfect RTÉ.

I heard that TV3 can actually be received in parts of Northern Ireland (even Belfast??) off the air.
Can this be possible when large chunks of Co.Cork (and other parts of Ireland) cannot receive any signal?

I can get a very grainy TV3 in Bangor - no sound though. With a booster aerial I could probably get something though. It just depends on the area - the transmitter near Dundalk is very powerful.

Basically TV3 are available only from the main transmitter sites (there are exceptions such as Collins Barracks and Woodcock Hill) which is why much of Co. Cork can't get TV3 as they rely on transposers rather than a main site. Donegal is also another TV3 black spot.

Clermont Carn near Dundalk is unashamedly for reception in the North (otherwise Kippure would have had RTE 2 on VHF from the start) and as such it's more than likely that a useable TV3 signal could be got in Ballymena and Portadown rather than in Dingle or Bantry.

TV3 is also available from the RTE Holywell Hill transmitter site which is just on the border and overlooking Derry City - although TV3's poor web site makes no mention of it. I'm nearly sure it's on Ch.29 and good pictures should be available as far as Limavady and up towards Magilligan Point. However, if you're receiving RTE from their Moville transmitter then you've no hope in getting TV3 because it's not available from there :(

In my grannys in South Fermanagh i tuned in a grainy[but easily visible]TV3.The sounds fine, the only thing bad is its a bit snowy but its easily watchable and the signals strong enough for text.

Probably coming from Truskmore in Sligo which is where I get my signals from.

Maybe not from South Fermanagh. Reception of the Carin Hill transmitter from Longford is quite widespread over a lot of Fermanagh (inc. Enniskillen) and parts of Tyrone, including Omagh and even up in the Sperrins. My grandparents receive their RTE signal from Carin Hill even though they are some 80 miles away from the transmitter line of sight! RTE1 and Network 2 are grand, TV3 a bit snowy, while TG4s' reception is weather dependent - fine when best, barely watchable while at it's worst.

The advantage of picking up Carin Hill is that only a single band UHF tuner is required for Irish TV services, and only one aerial is required for all four services (compared to two from Truskmore)

    question for northern correspondent :
Cairn hill reaches Arklow Co wicklow ,and here tg4 is also weakest-but its unusable as the welsh presely transmitter is too strong for it-if your aerial is pointed here towards cairn hill you will receive it wit very heavy co channel from presely in wales-and if you point towards presely you get the welsh channels, but with heavy co channel from cairn hill,
the co-channel on s4c is hardly noticable-thats the one thats on the same channel as cairn hills tg4.
I know this is going a bit off topic now and I promise I wont let it happen again

    :D
but do you know if in very fine weatherthat presely signal affects the fring viewers of Cairn hill in the North?

Black Hill in Scotland also operates on the same channels as Cairn Hill and it probably causes some interference on occasions, mainly to viewers in fringe areas of east Tyrone who can't get Clermont Carn or Truskmore.

    Why would you want TV3?

IMO its a terrible station. Its riddled with far too many adverts. It has pathetic shows and woeful sport commentators. There football coverage in particular is extremely frustrating. I mean did they pick these guys up off the street.

The only good thing about TV3 is there news presenter,

    God shes fine :D

Clemont Carns' signals cover East Tyrone very well while Truskmore is in general not received east of the Ballygawley roundabout. That's not to say it can't be done.

Reception of Carin Hill in Tyrone is mainly concentrated in the South West of the county, in Ballygawley, Fivemiletown & Fintona, up towards Omagh to the southern Sperrins. With the right equiptment (large high gain aerials, amps etc.) even TG4 can be brought in 100% in many of these places. This is usually done where Truskmore cannot be used for some reason or another, and Carin Hill installiations also prevent three TV aerials on the roof! (Usually Truskmore VHF, Truskmore UHF & UHF for either Brougher MT. or Strabane)

I've never seen Presely have any effect up here on RTE/TV3 reception. The Black Hill transmissions to sometimes appear around these parts, though I've only ever seen this at nighttime during the summer and is at its' strongest in the wee hours of the morning, therefore less chance of upsetting viewers! It doesn't seem to come in strong enough to affect RTE reception.

Apoligies if this is going off post...

Richard - I'd be interested to know where in Bangor you are. I'm near the DENI building and can get a weak RTE 1 in colour on an indoor with amp and TV3 usually appears EXTEMELY grainy on the main Scot/NI aerials. tried to get aerial men out but coulndn't do anything for RTE. If you know of someone good let me know.
Also have a friend in Rathmore who has super RTE1 Net2, and grainy TV3 and TG4 that varies with the weather- usually in colour but VERY grainy. His neighbour two doors down gets all four excellent!!!
Interestingly our Welsh aerial folks may be interested to know that in freak atmospherics during august I got BBC1 Wales on ch.52 where RTE1 normally appears during heavy rain.... (is it Bleanplwyf?)
Certainly BBC1 NW (on a frequency close to Net2 -56 - possibly 55 Winter Hill) is a frequent visitor in colour with Gordon Burns. Occasional BBC NE & Cumb - despite it being geographically closer - must be land between me and Caldbeck!

    Hi North down,
ICDG moderator will be upset with us for going off topic:D
the BBC one wales you picked up was most likely Moel y Parc , its in north east wales-interestingly ,looking at a map, theres nothing but sea between you and it-tv signals travel much better and further over sea than land.
Down in Arklow for good group b aerials with mast head amps that moel y parc is always there but very grainy-if you beam the aerial for it you get a decent picture-despite the fact that it has to hop and skip through snowdonia to find its way here.
I'm sure I'm going to be eaten alive here by others for sayin this:D but as long as you are not in a deep valley and you've a chimney top aerial ( a good group c d ) and mast head amp youll get clermont carn.
commonor gardener idea is to go to your neighbours whose reception is good and get their installer to put it up for you as he did a good job
    regards mm

I unfortunately tried their aerial man (from lisburn - 25 miles away) but he couldn't get it - the cochannel from Whitehead on 52 and 56 was aproblem. TV3 was as clear as bell tho.
The frustrating thing is I can get the weak RTE1 on an indoor with an amp!

    Rhymus,
get in line I'm first, and its not just the physical thing-I want a relationship with her-something meaningfull:rolleyes:

    North down :
Just a word - have you ever tried Band three vhf RTE one and Network two from Kippure in North Wicklow-its strong( and have seen it in south wexford, a similar distance away as you) and maybe possible where you are with a 7 or ten element horizontal band 3 vhf aerial-provided your tv can get vhf-In mhz, its around 183 or thereabouts
If your tv is UHF only-shur its time you got a new one-ah go on you deserve it.....

    ;)
