Corrupted Display Driver?

On startup I get an error message " The driver file that displays items correctly on your screen isn't working" It then recommends to download an updated version from Windows Update. I treid this but couldn't find anything remotely like a Display Driver - most updates seemed to be for secuirty.

    I'm using Windows ME.

Is there anything else I can try? Any other suggestions? Please keep in mind that I'm only a humble PC User whe giving suggestions - I may need a bit more direction then a techie.

In Windows Update, the likes of display drivers are going to be in the optional downloads section, accessible from the menu on the right. Only high priority downloads are listed by default.

Failing this, tell us what you computer is and we should be able to point you in the direction of the driver (assuming its store bought).

    Hi Aidan,
    Thanks for your reply.
I tried the windows update again - I had 3 options, Critical Updates (8), Windows ME Updates (37) and Drivers Updates (0). With amessage stating there are no Driver Updates available at this time.

I'm using a Packard Bell PC with windows ME.

I recently downloaded AVG virus detections and Zonealarm Firewall. On shutdown sometimes the PC re-started -started the scandisk, if I shut down again the PC shut down. I though this might be doing some damage but didn't do much to stop it other than re-installing the Firewall.

Could all of this be related?
    Thanks again.

Its unlikely that installing a firewall would effect your driver directly, although the fact that the disk check is starting could suggest that there may be something wrong with the disk itself, and its possible that the driver may be sitting in the same area as the error.
I would suggest going into My Computer, right clicking on the C drive, going into properties, clicking on the Tools tab and running a scan yourself. Select the options to scan for physical errors on the disk, as well as correcting errors found. This scan could take some time, depending on the size of the disk.

iirc Packard Bell's website was pretty good for downloading drivers. Try going to it, and they should have a support or download section. I think they let you pick your model and it gives you the correct drivers to download. Failing that go to the Control Panel, then System. There should be either a tab for 'Device Manager' or a button somewhere on one of the tabs for it. Device Manager will give you a list of all he devices in your PC, one of them will be a Display Adaptor, if you tell us what it is, then we can tell you where to download the drivers, or you can go to that company's website (probably either Intel, Nvidia or Ati) and download them from there.

    Lads,
Thanks for your help, I ran scan disk and left the machine work away for a while on my return the screen was locked with lots of lines (green and red). I swtiched off and restarted the PC and it started up perfectly. I went to shut down and the PC restarted again, again starting with a scan disk. I powered off again and it powered down ok. This does not always happen, mabe 1 in 5 times. How do I fix this?

Packard bell iMedia with Windows ME.

I'm off to bed now and again thanks for your help.
