I know you asked for Europe but most of these are in the US (all apart from Staal Plaat) but the price of the CDs and shipping still make it cheaper than here. I've been known to spend a pretty penny at these sites.

Important Records: Mainly their own releases but they carry some other stock. But basically anything on this label is pure gold, some of it is pretty weird but all of it is excellent.

Aquarius Records: Pretty much anything you can think of here.

Staal Plaat: Based in Amsterdam and Berlin. Quite good.

CD Universe: Not as obscure as the other three but they get a lot of specialist stuff as well as mainstream releases.

Nah, I never make orders smaller than five CDs/vinyl and I've never been hit with import duty.

couple of UK ones that I have used in the past and have no complaints about:

    www.actionrecords.co.uk
    www.normanrecords.com

www.cd-baby.com comes to mind. Other than that it is advisable to check out musicians on the likes like www.musicians.ie. Very often they all have their own CDs up on their websites and a few mp3s to listen to. I bought some really cool stuff from unsigned bands.

If only the record labels wouldnt be so bloody ignorant and check them out as well

I generally download all my music from various P2P networks. Rarely buy anymore (used to buy a lot - have about 200 albums at home).

I honestly think that's a travesty. Yes I agree that CDs, especially in Ireland, are overpriced but boycotting CDs isn't going to hurt anyone apart from the bands involved. If their CDs aren't selling the label will just drop them and then no more music from those bands.

I generally buy low/mid-priced CDs in high street stores, and full-priced ones online. Having sleeve-notes and artwork is a major reason for this. I also like knowing that I'm supporting the artist (especially if they're relatively new). The sound quality of mp3s is too inconsistent for my liking so I rarely, if ever download music.

Vinyl Tap is a great site for second hand rarities, and they're based in the UK.

The cds i've already bought cover most labels I'm ever likely to download music from. That covers my conscience - having already given them an obscene amount of money. Its their problem that they've constructed a business model that requires huge amounts of promotion, music videos and affiliated bull.

I get your point. Considering I don't buy much major label stuff anymore I feel guilty downloading the artists I like.

I'm with you John2, why steal from somebody you like? It is very easy to buy music cheaply, I think that is just a cop out.

I buy the albums that give me at least 10 bux worth of enjoyment. I've no issues with not buying the others.

Oh and it's usually from the band's own websites.

Check out insound.com , American website. Great free downloads as tasters, great recommendations and great prices. When they send cds they under quote the value of the cds so you don't have to pay duty. If you are a member of the excellent indie radio streaming site www.3wk.com you can get a 15% discount code for insound. The only problem is that it takes a while for shipments to arrive, but then again it does with European Amazon too!

    Cheers,
    Mack

If you don't know the difference between supporting a local band or feeding a money hungry company I don't know what to tell you.

No I don't hang out at Whelans and support posing idiots. I support bands with more meaning than that who wouldn't sign to a money hungry label.

Ehhhh for what it's worth, it's the likes of HMV and Tower and our beloved government who are to blame for CD's being expensive, not the money hungry capitalists down at the record label. Downloading music isn't going to hurt anyone but musicians and bands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

What about the hundreds of independent record labels putting out great music at a loss because people are downloading instead? What about bands being dropped by record labels because they're not shifting enough CDs? If the Arcade Fire or whatever band people seem to care about got dropped tomorrow because their album wasn't selling because people were downloading you'd probably be all up in arms.

Would they sign to a nice non-money hungry label then? Oh wait, there's no such thing. Some are better than others but all are involved in the record business. All artists need to make something from their art, otherwise they are really just hobbyists.

i'm not sure about the second part doc j, you've got it with the pricing part though, but recently there's been alot of bands that have garnered huge support from putting music on the net, wilco have done it for years, i think if the quality is there you'll make it. I download alot of music, legalishly!! as do most of my friends but generally we'll get the album too, and i think this holds for alot of people. Also you've got to admit that music reaches a much larger audience and more people have found bands that in the past they would never have heard of, and that can only be a good thing...

this is in no ways a personal attack doc, most of the time im in agreement with yourself but you posted last and all that!
