    Lads

Have any of you set up a 2nd TV off the Dish

What did you do, buy etc and how much did it cost and where did you buy?

I know you can do this with a 2nd LNB but has anyone actually done it?

    Cheers

It depends which of the two scenario's you're talking about:

    1. If you only want to be able to watch Sky upstairs (for example) then all you need to do is run a standard co-ax cable from either of the RF OUT sockets at the back of the dish to your second TV, then tune in the channel on that TV (like you would for a video).
If you want to be able to control the box from upstairs, you'll need a TV-Link and (optional) a second remote - these can be purchased online...check the Links page of the main site - then you connect your co-ax cable to RF OUT 2, connect it thru the TV-Link at the other end and enable the voltage option in a "hidden" EPG menu - this incidentially is how I have it set up and it works great.

    2. If however, you want to be able to watch 2 DIFFERENT Sky channels simultaneously, you'll need a second box and a new LNB - you'll also need a 2nd viewing card & subscription (tho Sky are offering these - in the UK anyway - at a reduced rate). Note that the 2nd box can also be a new Sky+ box (not available in ROI yet tho) which gives you the ability of watching 2 different channels while recording a 3rd.

I think this covers the options but if anybody can see anything I've missed jump in :)

    Hope this helps...

    Cheers.

I have the new Sky + box and my old digibox running off the same dish. At the moment I do not have a card for the old box as Sky are sorting out the pricing for the mirror subscription over here.

Sky + comes with a quattro LNB in the box.

Apologies, I meant to say that I wanted to watch 2 different channels.

A new LNB? Do u mean put a 2nd one of the dish, can this be done by a "lay" person

    Where did u get one?

    cheers

Thanks Tony: Yes I got the box in the UK. They did not ask for an address and I even told them that I was bringing it back. They even contacted Sky services to check what forms needed to be filled out. They seemed quite happy taking my £300 surprisingly enough.

Yop: The quattro is a four way LNB which replaces the single one that used to be on the end of the dish. Two of the feeds are used for Sky + and one is used for my old digibox. I got it installed by a local independant as I needed to get cables put through walls, however other than not having the right drill bit I reckon I could have done it all myself.

    hi all,
tell me if I am reading this correctly
Shane you paid £300 (sterling?) for an unsubsidised SKY + box and brought it back over here - filled out new sub form for sky and had the card for your old sky box switched on , in the new SKY + box with an Irish address.

This is BIG NEWS as it means that anyone can have a SKY plus box over here as long as they are willing to buy it at the full price.
The fact that its not officially launched over yet doesn't matter-ie the delay is for to allow SKY to work out some sort of Subsidy on the box and the final subscription here?

I thought that everyone had to pay £3oo stg in the UK for the s+ box? why aren't they available over here then?

Sky have still to sort out some issues with the Sky + box regards to pricing etc., but in essence what you have read is correct.

    Kaiser,

Do you mean the back of the digibox ?

I don't seem to have RF out on mine.

yep...there should be two "standard" co-ax sockets there...you just plug the cable into one of them (subject to what I was sayin about the TV Plus option before) and plug the other end into the 2nd TV

I'm in work right now so I cant check the exact labelling/positioning of these sockets but I'll check back later so let me know if you have any more questions :)

I am in the process of getting Sky Digital installed and am shoping around for an installer. I want to have 3 t.v. points in the house(actually I have 3 points installed but 2 are dormant but are wired up the cables feeding back to the attic) to watch t.v. from each room. I'm told I can only watch one channel at a time from all t.v. points i.e. if bbc1 is on the t.v. in the main room ppl in the other rooms can only watch this also. Anyhow I contacted www.irelands-satalite.ie who do the installation for £60 or £80 depending on the Sky package which is typical. However when I asked about the extra points the cost was £300 and I quote:
"If you can have a return path installed using ct100 cable we could fit an amp with remote control from all three locations (providing the existing wiring is up to standard) for £300 plus vat." I am wondering if this is the way to go as it does seem a bit expensive. Could I get what I want for less. Any ideas/help would be appericated.

drakus-you can go the complicated route or the easy one
just think of it this way-£300 would pay for 2years roughly for Skys new mirror subscription for a second box-you should be able to pick one of those up on e-bay or QXL.com.
Get your local installer(not the rip-off merchant) to install both boxes and wire one of them into your distribution amp with ordinary cheap aerial cable ( I got 40ft of it for a tenner).
Then buy a set of remote control extenders-so you can work the second box from another room and bingo you're there:)
Your installer might have to change the frequency the second box uses-but that wont be a problem if you are watching via scart

[ps]why did you contact the most expensive/rip off guys in ireland.

surely their is a local installer who could do this for you and for less ca$h.

Are you for real, what basis have you for making such remarks. have you ever bought from us? How do you know there is a local installer that can do this for less, you have absoultely no idea what equipment and labour time was involved in this quotation. We have referred your post to a moderator as it is libellious.

A thousand million apoligies Tony-I did not open the link on Drakus's post above and merely meant rip off in terms of there are a lot of "cow-boy" outfits out there.
I have read many of your posts and they contain the best of advice. The £10 cable suits me fine for what I wanted to do and was merely suggesting an alternative way of doing things-to work to a budget.
Also the reply was a quick one (hence not opening the link)-so the use of the term rip off was also a carry over from Chernoble's post.
Hope this apoligy is accepted??? friends?

Absolutely no problem, It takes a man to apologise. Perhaps my post was a little harsh having read chernobles comments, not for the first time he has posted an inflammatory contribution. I am also annoyed at Drakus who e mailed me several times for advice on a job which I had no input into and therefore its difficult to quote accurately. Perhaps he should get his electrician to finish the job. Forgive my annoyance but I answer at least 50 mails a day from people who have either bought elsewhere and been let down or just looking for free advice with no intention of buying anything. I'm happy to contribute to this forum but not if my companies mails are going to be quoted out of context.

    Regards (still friends) Tony

    Seems like an appropriate time for this;

Tony, I've gotten some free advice thru email off you in the past too, so thanks for that :) Finally getting digital installed too, just have to look for a bigger TV first.

Actually tony i know exactly what is involved in terms of labour and costs, your price is very high and could not be justified if he got a quote from a local installer.

    previous post retracted.

    previous post retracted.

Well actually you do not, you have no idea what equipment I planned to use on this job , perhaps you would be good enough to list the products and labour time in question since you claim to know so much about this particular job. Your use of term rip/off merchant is unacceptable. you may have retracted that particular post but I think an apology is in order unless you can give some evidence to your claim that I rip people off. Perhaps you have another agenda.

BTW I am a local installer

Well I cant comment on your assertion that you are a fool and know nothing as I do not know you, however your lack of knowledge on libel laws does give some credence to this. I do not have a satellite crew as I work alone although I do occasionally use sub contrcators when the need arises, and yes I always try and work with a smile, beats a grimace every time and customers seem to prefer it.
