recently noticed a sign in tesco ballybrack written in black marker and taped to the wall .it stated that tesco may request the address of consumers refunding goods , is this legal , it made no referance to credit cards on the sign so i dont think its just meant for credit card holders and if anyones wondering what part of the shop its in its just on the wall right of the customer service desk as you exit the store

i know for a fact that it is to prove that the refund/exchange is real and that a real person asked for it thats all as for asking you for your address legality that angle never came up b4 persume if u dont want to give it then dont but u will still be asked to sign it

Well you've no right to a refund if the good's not faulty etc anyway. So I presume a refund is given on Tesco's terms ie: Give us your address

BT2 where I used to work ask for refund addresses too, as do HMV. AFAIK it's just to ensure that they've a valid return - you get their address on your receipt when you buy so it's only fair i suppose.

Lots of places where I've gotten refunds (Penney's, Dunnes, some sports shops) have asked for addresses. Usually I just scribble down a really quick address and that's fine.

It's to put you in a big database to make sure you're not in every other day trying to get refunds, and if you are they can look more closely at the patterns...if you keep buying DVD's and bringing them back they might decide to refuse refunds to you in future

It may also be to reduce the likelyhood of staff giving themselves fake refunds. A large UK retailer that I used to work for had that problem with a manager. He stole thousands.
