The play and charge idea is a nice one.

And I'll be getting the VGA cable too... should work nicely with my high definition TV...

All the better then... actually now that I think my TV has a DVI connection on it... so that cable would be useless....

Mine's got a dvi connection but you just get a vga-dvi adapter and you're sorted.

Well you can get a HDMI > DVI adapter too... that way it all stays digital.

Exactly what cable comes with the 360 anyway? Is it HDMI?

To be honest... I really don't know too much about this whole HDTV lark other than it looks nice...

Here's a quote from an article on Techseekers.net
Okay so now that I know what is needed on the TV side which console supports what?
Well it is still very early days yet for the PS3 but the Xbox 360 is almost upon us but we do have some concrete information in regards HD connectivity.

The Xbox 360 supports component & VGA out, the more expensive "Xbox 360" package will come with a component cable but you will have to buy the VGA cable separately no matter what package you buy (the cheaper core system package will only come with a SDTV cable).

So far no HDMI or DVI support is planned by Microsoft & recent rumblings have suggested there never will be due to the fact that's it output chip is analogue only. If you're looking for HD action with the Xbox 360 come Christmas you will need a HDTV with component or VGA connections, the console itself will support the 720p and 1080i resolutions.

There is a possibility in the future that third party after market cables will come out for the Xbox 360 that will convert the analogue output into a digital signal for a DVI or HDMI connection but I really wouldn't hold your breath.

Sony's Playstation 3 is a good deal more promising connectivity wise, it features dual HDMI outputs so an adaptor to DVI is inevitable, it also has the same regular analogue video output from the PS2 which already has a HD component output cable so a similar cable is to be expected for the PS3. No word on VGA support but it will no doubt show up eventually seeing as Microsoft have gone down that route, the console itself will support 720p, 1080i and 1080p resolutions.
*1080p will only be supported over HDMI/DVI

The VGA adapter is just what i need to fill all the ports on my new Samsung Hi-Def LCD, Hard disk recorder is in the component, Xbox 360 in PC input and leaves the DVI for Sky Hi-Def next year.:D
Remember when all we wanted was more scart sockets?:p

The VGA cable comes with two other pins attached, thought I saw some mention of them on a review site as being sound cables

Does anyone know if the xbox will work correctly with just the VGA part of it plugged in as I think the sound ports are on the other side of my TV and it would be difficult to plug them in as well

I'd say those are the sound cables alright... You'll probably have to get an extension for them... but will the sound ports on the other side of your TV relate to the video being displayed from the VGA channel... oh this is all terribly confusing...

I guess I'll stick the audio leads into my 5.1 amp...

the vga cable connects to normal pc monitor (duh) but it also has an optical output, for use 5.1er's, and the red and white is normal analog sound, if your connecting to analog sound system, or tv, i think ill get this cable to, and get some nice high res goodness on my monitor, cant afford a proper screen yet;)
