I need to find the service tag for a Dell server in order to get support. It's not on the side of the box where it should have been so they pointed me to this page:

Would it be safe enough to install this on a machine, particulary this one which is a domain controller?

Have you checked at the back of the case where everything plugs in? Usually on Dells there's another white sticker with a barcode on it which also has the service tag.

yea its safe enough. The service tag is embedded on motherboard so it reads it off this. It doesn't looks for any personal info as far as i know.

Try this first. Go to the Windows Help and Support program, it is in the start menu and can also be accessed from the control panel and by pressing F1 when you are at the desktop.

When it opens, just Click "Computer Information" an all the details of your system including Dell model will be present on the right hand side of the page.

Try Belarc Advisor, it lists mine when i run it.

If it's that easy why do they want to install a program me wonders??

just go in to the bios...all dell systems have the service tag entered into the bios screen..
