Not sure if this is the right place but...

I am very unsure what to do about what I want to do after I leave school, I have been telling myself and other people that I am going to go into computer programming which is a good job, will have good pay and I have always been interested in computers, I have build websites at the age of 12 and got 6k hits a day on it but im not sure if I want to be in an office my hole life I would like to be outside more this is why im thinking of going into Architecture because I love construction I just love looking at building site looking at plans ect but im not sure if I would be able make up plans for houses or im not sure if I would be able to get the points for it.

Which do you think I should go into?

I'm a programmer. If i could go back i'd be an architect.

As a programmer you get told what to do, when to do it and if you don't do it fast enough people rag on your ass.

    Architect would be waaaay better.

Programming is booooring. Important to note that liking computers does not in turn mean you will like programming. I hated it when I did it in college.

Just look at courses and see if any look fun/interesting.

when you find out what you want to do, let the rest of us know how you came up with the decision.

    most people will never know.

just think about what you enjoy doing, and take it form there...

We can't really decide for you. What age are you?

Go to the open days of colleges and see as much as you can of courses that you may have a passing interest in. I hadn't a clue what I was going to do in college until the January of my Leaving Cert year.

Don't let it stress you either. What you do in college doesn't necessarily decide what career you go into. There's nothing preventing you from doing something else later on.

I disagree. I'm a programmer. I like the mental challenge. Of course it's going to differ by person.

If you can't see yourself in an office then how would you feel about repeating to try and get the points?

    Clown college.

Seriously though - nobody can or should decide what you do in college or with your life.

If you're unsure what to do perhaps a year out would help you get your head together. You could try getting some work experience in different places or even just travel. You may decide on something completely different at the end of it. Too many people rush straight from school into college because they're made to feel that you have to go to college straight away. Then they end up hating their course and just going through the motions.

Like you I was considering computer programming when I left school but I was unsure so I took some time out and worked at various things. It was three years before I finally went to college and it was to study film. I couldn't even imagine doing programming now.

So - take your time, don't rush your decision just because all your friends are going to college straight from school or because your parents are putting pressure on you. Figure out what you want to do in your own time.

And you don't think the exact same thing would happen as an architect?
You're paid to do something, don't do, you get in shít.

Doesn't matter if you're designing houses or programmes.
Don't know where you got this fanciful notion one is different from the other.

Be noted, architecture is a very, very hard college course with usually a high points requiremnent with most of the students quite apt at drawing/technical drawing/construction studies etc.,

You should seriously consider doing an aptitude test to find out what type of job would really suit you. Your school should be able to help if not there are many professional career guidance councellors you could go and seek advice from.

My sister wanted to become an Architect when she was still at school but having completed an aptitude test she discovered she could not visualise in 3 dimensions (Spatial relations) but excelled at persuasion skills, so now she works as a property surveyor selling office blocks etc and hasn't looked back.

Its something I think you should consider and it might help in choosing a career for you.

    Good Luck!

Definitely do not jump into something for the sake of going to college....I did and it was a stupid thing to do. Before, during and after the Leaving I hadn't a clue in my head what I wanted to do so basically picked a course that sounded halfways interesting and went with it...BIG mistake....stuck with it til Xmas...knew I hated it...and left...roll on following Sept. started another course in a different college...year and a bit later....left that one...there is a point here..

Anyhow...apart from the amount of money it was costing me I decided that I really had to be sure before I went down the college route again...so for 5 years...yes 5!! I worked in different jobs...retail, civil service, bank, and ended up in education working in a setting that I loved and above all it was interesting...I actually liked going to work everyday...well most of them...anyhoo went back to college for the third time last year and haven't looked back...as a "mature student" I know this is what I want to do so I'm motivated to do my best and get the best degree I can out of it.

All I can say is like others above suggested take a year or two or 5!! Try and get as much experience in different jobs that you feel you might be interested in....it pays off in the end....GOOD LUCK!

I went to a guidance counsellor before starting 5th year
he said i should be in a caring profession: counsellor, therapist, nursing maybe
so I went to college and did computer science.
he advised me on what subjects would suit my college choice.

now, years later, I want to study maths and languages and somehow combine everything in my job. smorgasjob.

I can't really offer any advice, being in the same situation (only I'm in fourth year, I've two years to decide) but, I'm kind of hoping to get some... I'm getting ridiculously stressed, to the point where I get chronic migranes and have to leave school almost daily...the thing is I want to do something I like and am good at. Sounds simple? The problem is, I'm not particularly good at anything. And I've tried EVERYTHING, from salsa and cancan to olympic handball and sign language. As well as all the ordinary subjects. And while I'm not bad academically (didn't do too good in the JC, 3as but I didn't really study) I'm not spectacular...Really, I just want someone to tell me what subjects to pick, and what to do in college, and before anyone asks, relaxing and not thinking about it now isn't an option. Why? Because I really can't do that :o
