you people are so greedy. ITV give u access to all the channels and now you want more. I hope they encrypt them again n that'll teach you

I may be missing a point here but for those that want itv 1 2 etc on the irish epg if sky were to do that it would probably cost up to 5euro per month extra dont sky pay bbc worldwide around 1.50 each per subscriber for bbc1 and 2. and also there is tv3 blocking them. so for the moment I would be happy with itv in other channels. Its a pain for those with sky plus but at least its fta now.

If that's correct (and I have no reason to doubt you) I'd gladly pay another 3 euro a month to have BBC3 and BBC4 on the EPG.

    ITV... could really care less.

You could always take out the card, reboot the box and save the BBC's and ITV's as favourites thus being able to access them via the blue button.

Does that work if you replace ROI card?

Definitely a handy idea if it works!

Is channel5 FTA? or is it included in the FTV card and standard British package ? Would it be possible if someone was to get a northern ireland sky subscription to be have acsees to all the Uk terrestrail channels plus RTE and TG4 etc ? Wouldn't that work out with the best of both worlds.

"five" is FTV, needing the FTV card, or UK sub.

And yes, a NI card now would be the best subscription to have right now. I wonder if Sky have noticed an increased subscription base in NI yet? :)

theNI subscription is indeed the holy grail but it would not be too good for when programmes are blocked on RTÉ

I haven't actually tried this - it's just a theory of mine - It may only work if you have a FTV card. What I'm thinking of is delete some of your favourites if have used all 20, then swop Sub Card for FTV card. When loading is complete go to the Favourites (Services, 5) and place a check beside the BBCs/ITVs as desired. Save them and remove FTV and replace with Sub Card- then I think it would be on the blue button.

I will try this myself, I promise and will report back. I suppose I should have tried it myself before opening my big mouth. ;)

Favorites only list the channels on the current active EPG..

But swapping to UK EPG does not require box reboot.

    Go 501 Sky news.
Press Red, wait for Interactive to have loaded.
Turn card upside down or insert dummy card. Make sure pushed right in to activate "card in/out" switch at end of slot.
    Press backup to exit Interactive,
The UK EPG will load. minus C4 and Five, as they need a FTV card.

Note Sky 3 is now FTV, like C4 and Five. A significant development.

So nearly worked :( When you add in bbc1 to 4 and itv 1/2 it drops them as soon as irish epg is back. Imagine its cos rte is 101 and bbc is 101.

There is an interesting article in The Sunday Times. 2 paragraphs that caught my eye
ITV paid £29.3m (€43.4m) to acquire its stake in TV3 in September 2000 in a move that also included a wide-ranging programme supply agreement. TV3 owns the exclusive rights to broadcast a number of ITV soaps, dramas and reality TV shows and believes that ITV is prohibited from transmitting these programmes to Ireland via satellite under the terms of the EU’s cable and satellite directive. This edict does not prevent ITV from being transmitted via cable by NTL and Chorus.

It is not clear whether TV3 is seeking financial compensation for the loss of exclusivity or whether it is seeking to have ITV’s channels scrambled or encrypted for Irish audiences, something that industry insiders say would be near impossible.

I think the immediate impact of this is that it scuppers any chance of ITV appearing on the irish epg in the near future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,439 ✭✭✭Richard

I think you're right - no ITV regions will appear on the ROI EPG any time soon. The Sunday Times article does amuse me, however - it talks about scrambling channels "for Irish audiences".

Although it does concede that this is "near impossible", they should realise that it is completely impossible. FTA is FTA! As we all know, it's like saying that a FTA analogue signal from Brougher Mountain could be encrypted as soon as it leaked over into Co Donegal.

I remember RTE askning for a similar impossibility when the BBC went FTA.

BTW are Lidl doing DSat boxes at the mo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 599 ✭✭✭jonnygee

Without going off topic I dont think lidl are selling boxes at the moment. I bought mine at the end of August and I am using it now beside a digibox as an astra 28 east fta reciever to feed a second signal to a dvd recorder so that I can watch one channel and record another.

Iirc the reasons the BBC extras are not on the epg in Ireland and in my opinion are (1) sky charges for access-they got BBC1 and 2 NI there as part of an earlier deal where they paid the BBC for them. This was as far as they were prepared to go to counteract the competitive advantage the cable co's and mmds had in having them. They wont pay for the others as they would be *cough* damaging to sky channels-especially News 24 and (2) the Beeb cannot be seen to be spending its licence money on providing extra functionality to foreign viewers in the ROI with British licence money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭georgekildare

I agree that there is no chance that BBC and ITV will pay for a placing on the ROI epg.

However, isn't it commercially advantageous for Sky to put the additional channels on the epg for nothing in order to increase their customer base? Because of the easier availability of these FTA channels on a more flexible non-sky PVR isn't Sky in danger of losing customers in Ireland?

    ITV wouldnt but UTV would

assuming we dont get ITV2 and ITV4 tomorrow, can someone explain how ITV3 sneaked on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

ITV3 is a direct replacement for Granada Plus which was a subscription channel. i'd imagine the EPG costs were already paid for at launch

ditto for ITV News which replaced ITN News

So is 120 now ITV 4 in the UK or do they have to wait until 6pm.

Note: It is not on our EPG yet but if they are waiting till 6pm maybe we are too.......ever the optomist!
