Next Gen consoles and PC upgrading

I'm going to the states in the new year and was thinking of upgrading.

I was thinking of going AMD 4000 or its dual core equivalent and an X1800XT(If they are available by then)

Along with a motherboard and cpu cooler your looking at the guts of 1300 or there abouts.

Then I see the specs of these new consoles and their comparatively low price and I'm wondering should I just hold off until the PC can take the performance crown again. But I have no idea when that is going to be.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

you'd be looking approx €1000 just for the chip and gfx card, and OCUK have stock of the X1800XT's now, so availability shouldn't be a problem.

Consoles are for different kind of games, i much prefere FPS games on PC because its they're better suited to the controls (keyboard/mouse). Strategy games are the same, imo.

I totally agree on that point. Don't know how people play halo on the X Box just seems unnatural to me.

I guess with more and more games being developed for both platforms I'm concerned that I'd spend that much money that won't be able to handle the best games about. Or that ATI or NVidia will step it up a gear to bring something out to beat the consoles.

I think I'll wait to see what the XBox 360 is capable of and then make my decision.

Overclockers have them illustrated but if you look at the small text near a blue box you'll see that they are pre-order and they are not stocked yet! For an x1800xt you are looking at the 10th or after fellas! :)

Christmas time sounds about right to me too. Wondering if graphics cards will drop in price with the release of the next gen consoles.

Why pay so much cash for something everyone else is going to have as a standard.

Summed up in the blog of one of the guys from toms hardware

OCUK don't have stock yet, They were told the 4th of November I think but there's some problems with shipping.

Apparently Tuesday (tomorrow) is possible http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=5862007&postcount=73

I have mine on order since the 28th of October so fingers crossed I'll be getting one of the first batch.

I'm still waiting on my x1800xt was meant to be in last wednesday :( so hopefully i should have it by friday....

Seems Nvidia has is releasing a 7800TX 512MB clocked at 550 / 1800 using the same mem as the X1800XT, it also well and truly kicks the X1800XT's arse and will be available in shops before the X1800XT.

    So basically ATI are screwed.

comments, otherwise it's just speculation, which would mean your just another Nvidia fan-boy needlessly spamming...

No spamming, simple mathmatics. Just calculate the fillrates and memory bandwidth that the new Nvidia card will have and you see it will have a clear advantage over the X1800XT, mainly because it drastically narrows the GPU clock speed advantage of ATI while still having 8 more pipes, whilst having exactly the same memory and mem clocks.

You'd expect the more advanced memory controller on X1800XT to still retain a slight edge there, but the extra 8 pipes and the closer to ATI clockspeed will give it a clear edge.

You hurling abuse in my direction cos you've already pre-ordered an X1800XT??? :p

Where do mathmatics come into driver optimization?
You hurling abuse in my direction cos you've already pre-ordered an X1800XT???

Hardly, I'm delighted to see it, this card only came out because nvidia got scared. You should be thanking ATI for this rather than making wild unfounded statements. With any luck ATI will rush out another card to stay on top of the pile and we'll get even more powerfull equipment to play with :)

I'm due an upgrade an ATI have treated me very well in the past. Buying this card means I can play Fear at a higher res than I can with my X800XT so this upgrade makes sense to me. All I asked for was for you to back up your info with actual facts :)

/me gets popcorn ready (not just for this, but for the whole interweb fanboy war that is about to happen!)

:v: <- gotta love this little fella

sounds like the nvidia card is pretty sweet alrite. We'll have to wait until they are both out and compare

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,166 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

and see what "optimisations" both companies come up with :)

As you will see when the reviews go live at 2pm today, the 7800GTX 512 Kicks ATI's arse, and is available as of today, unlike the X1800XT.

Prelim rsults indicate that at stock it can top 10k in 3DMark 05 when paired with a stock FX57 or similar.

Is there not still an issue there with architecture? eg the ATi's having more advanced architecture than nVidia's card and their being fully supportive of Shader Model 3.0, unlike nVidia, plus able to AA and HDR at the same time etc? Also ATi's video support enhancements are unique. I don't think it is just all about who can go faster, ATi seem to be approaching graphics from a qualitative approach rather than quantitative which makes the simple comparisons we used to be able to make much more difficult now.

Yeah its crazy money. Do you reckon 2 of them in sli with an FX57 will out perform a PS3 or XBox 360?
It's important that the PC keeps its crown :)

I'd say even with the price you will be lucky to get your hands on one. Maybe they are still governed by an NDA or something and what we are seeing are just leaks.

Overclocker's generally let you pre order top end cards so that's where I'll keep watching.
