Thinking of upgading to an Alienware Aurora 7500 SLI in the near future and I was just wondering whats the feeling of the community does anyone have this setup and is it as good as it should be for all that money?

performance wise they are up with the top of the bunch.

but you can build a computer as powerful (if not more) than an alienware for a lot cheaper.

alienware you are paying for a name.

No no, they are wayyyyyy overpriced, you are paying for the name and the shiny case.
Build your own, you will save a shed load of cash :).

It's very simple really. If I had won the lotto, there's absolutely no question about it, I'd be going alienware. If you have the money, and you want performance and good customer care, they're the way to go.

If you have the wherewithall to build your own, it is cheaper to do so, but the only customer care you get is from boards.ie. ;)

Edit: This question gets asked every once in a while....what amazes me is the rush of people to say "build your own" without checking if the person wants to. :)

When speccing out the pc just look at the price of the case and paintjob, theres your answer there.

You could save yourself a lot of cashola if you built the computer yourself. Just buy the hardware of komplett and it will work out much cheaper1

Really? Can you show us how?

Assuming the OP wants a 7800Gtx sli system with P4 340 and 2gb ram as the base then skimps on everything else and gets the most basic of other parts.

Can you find cheaper on Komplett ?

Oh and I'd say it'd be a job to find all the same components with similarly high spec

Ah, the individual parts are slightly more expensive than on komplett....though there isn't a huge difference.

Sounds to me like you should just go with the alienware box josh.

Plus if anything goes wrong you have someone else to blame... unlike me.... :(

well yea thats the thing you do pay for the box design and name but then again I' lazy and all the works done for you. I also work full time and don't have the freedom to spend hours searching for each component individually. Still it would be fun to make my own and Archytas is right if something does go wrong (and knowing me it will) I can fall back on them.

Building your own also gives you the ability to learn about computers assuming you don't already.

You have to research each piece and look at loads of different stuff. So when something goes wrong in the future you don't have to ring customer support you know what's wrong yourself.

If for no other reason than experience I'd vote for building one yourself. It's a learning experience.

same here, its very interesting stuff, but, if the lad wants to buy a rig let him, I'm sure alienware machines are bloody good too

    Komplett

    Amd 4200 €440
    600 watt PSU €147
    2Gb 3200 €230
    2x 7800 GTX €1150
    160Gb sata €87
    16x dvd €43
939 Sli mobo w built in sound €215
    Cool looking Case €125

    Total €2435

No monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard, pretty much stripped of everything(except the above)the Alienware comes to......€ 2715 ex delivery and inc vat.

So 250 quid is the cost of warranty, tech support of some kind and a snazzy logo.

build yer own save you thousands

Now now....I got a 939 SLI, SATA2, PCI-E mobo with built in 7.1 sound for around 125 on Komplett. Crackin' board it is too.

Your point is taken though. The savings defo aren't what people make them out to be. The key for me is control of what's going into my machine.

Didnt say what mobo was in alienware but they had some DFi gear there so assumed it was the lanparty board :o

But then again could be epox :(

alienware r good i have one and i have a firend who has one too. they have a great customer support and will replace ANY part np fast if there is any problem or even a hint of one. their helpline is 24/7 (but will just pass u on too their american helpline if u ring at like 4am or something) they do give wat they promise and yes ofcourse you will save if u build urself but how much really does depend. compared to the dell xps they arnt that much dearer.

thats the thing isn't it I would like to try and put together my own PC but I don't have the time an I'd probably endup frying a GT6600 or something which would just kill me. I know enough about PC for the moment bur maybe one day after I've won the Lotto I'll have enough money and time to play around with all that
