    Hello there,

I have a file that is too big for Excel to handle. I managed to open this file "fully" in Notepad. All I need to do now is count how many lines I have in that file.
Is there an easy way to do this in Notepad?

turn on the status bar, it will then show you the cursor position. Put cursor on last line and bob's ur uncle!

    Hi irlrobins!

That's probably going to sound like a stupid question but how do you turn on that Status Bar exactly?

Click view and select status bar

I knew I was going to get that reply! ;) Unfortunately, I only have 4 menus in Notepad: "File", "Edit", "Format" and "Help"...

    Help!? :(

    What OS are you running?

Try using "write" instead of notepad.

If you fancy a download, google ultraedit or textpad. They're much nicer text editors for large files.

I downloaded Ultraedit and it worked beautifully! Thanks a million Khannie! :D

And to answer your other quaetions, I am running Windows 2000 SP4 (no "View" opttion in Notepad I'm afraid) and I did indeed try opening this big file with Wordpad but it didn't work...

    All sorted now anyway! :D

mmm, just after checking notepad on a Win2K machine here. No view option either. Is this the same in all versions of Windows prior to 2k aswell?

Notepad is very basic, which is exactly what it is meant to be. It has many uses as a result. I use it a lot for various things. Simple things like even when you are going through a long thread on Boards and want to reply to various posts. You can type your reply in it as you scroll down the thread and even cut and paste a few quotes. Then when you are finished, hit Reply and copy and paste the lot in. There are lots of situations like that where you want to hold on to a piece of text for a few moments while you are doing something. Notepad is the ideal tool for it.

If you want more functionality then Write, Wordpad or even one of the word processors is the way to go, or failing that then download some special editor.

explore your start menu and into the "send to" folder - new shortcut for EDIT

then when you open the file it will display lines and cols at the bottom

(or open edit in a command prompt)
