    I think this one's just a little less off the head than the last one. There are a few people on here I know who are going to get what this is about after three lines. Criticise and suggest away....

    The Town

    Half-eight, half-light,
    A summer day at it’s close.
    Fridays, like always,
    They stand and watch the sweet
    papers and the crisp packets,
    And the half-empty bottles
    on the ground,
    Or sit on concrete steps,
    and talk, and laugh.
    Or just don’t speak at all.
    And the street is filled;
    With children’s play,
    With grease-soaked smells and distant music
    from half-open doors.
    Or old men, with crumbling faces
    Who mustn’t hear it anymore.
    Stuttering and flickering are born;
    Thirteen orange candles,
    And the sun is banished into the night.
    Stamping to keep out the cold,
    A throwaway joke,
    Like a spark in dry tinder,
    Sets the sodium blaze alight.
    And if one of us should slip away,
    Amidst sideways glances in the half-light glow,
    In search of shade
    and warmer places,
    Nothing would be said.
    But in those days the night-times stretched longer,
    And we knew better too,
    What it was to stand on the side of the street,
    Until it was time to go home.
