    "Revleations"

The End is Nigh ... for the MMA League in 2005 that is. This has been another successful year for Irish Mixed Martial Arts and the MMA League.

Revelations will take place in UCD's Sports Centre on Saturday November 19th.

Weigh Ins start at 10am and Competition starts at 11.30

There's already been a lot of interest and entries received so it's looking like this year will be bigger than last years final. Plenty of Rookies have entered so it's a perefect opportunity for anyone to give it a shot, regardless of how little training experience you have!

For entry forms and further information check out www.mmaleague.com

There is a limited number of competition spots available so get your entries in ASAP to guarantee your palce.

    Hi Colm,

    Can you clarify ,

"There will be no head-shots allowed standing or on the ground for these matches, so it will be a safe environment for new comers to test their skills."

    Yet

"Wins will be by submission or KO"

    The KO bit ?

I've only ever seen one fight stopped because of strikes in the MMA league.

Strikes to where ? - i assume if no head shots then only if other guy is getting utterly pasted in standup ?

Reason asking above ( KO with no headshot ? ) - contemplating entry.

The KO there means a knockout to the body, it rarely happens (as Tim said once in 6 MMa League events).

yeah a "pro" fighter was fighting a rookie and the fight was stopped after a series of rough body shots.

Can you elbow? Can you knee? Standing and ground?

you can knee, ground and standing. if you manage to knee while still being on the ground. what's the definition of being on the ground/ any part of your body other than the soles of your feet touching the mat?

    no elbows allowed at all.

I was KO'd in the competition. Not knocked out as in unconcious, but winded after about 20 knees and a nice hook to the body. It happens, not often.. But when you were as under-prepared as I was, it does. I felt like an idiot to be honest being the only guy, but well.. what can you do.

My advice for what it's worth to anybody entering the competition - Do some decent amount of sparring with a good kick boxer, get you used to being hit and get you used to drilling combinations. Work on your clinch and takedowns from the clinch.. Be calm, don't run straight in without thinking.. Just throw a few jabs and size the guy up, it will calm you down alot.

If I knew what I know now back then, I'm fully certain I wouldn't of being so horrid :)

yeah fair play john. pitty you didn't make it up for the bjj comp.

getting a good dig in the stomach from a good boxer will slow you right down. fortunetly, good boxers are hard to come by in mmaleague.

You should, it's good craic. Plus you get a chance to punch and kick those pesky grapplers, that's always fun. :)

There'll be a few of us from Limerick heading up.

Like I tell my athletes, particularly those who are on the fence about whether they should enter, everyone should compete at least once or twice. It's a good way to experience a step up in adrenaline and intensity than in the gym whilst also being a lot safer than trying this outside Supermac's at 3am!

If you discover that you don't like competing and just enjoy the training, that's cool. You've tried it out, and it wasn't for you. At least you've another perspective.

If you discover that you love competing and want to train more, and get more out of your sport/art, that's also cool.

Either way, you'll have a learning experience, if nothing else.

    Now get those entries in!

I was just thinking. if some one gets you in a RNC while you're in turtle then you stand up, will the ref stop the submission attempt because

    Quote:
    7. no standing submission attempts

or does this mean the person applying the submission must not be standing?

That would count as a legal submission, as the submission was applied on the ground. Also, potential for injury is relatively low.

Also, if someone did a dodgy shoot, and got caught in a guillotine/bread basket, and tapped out before the submission applier brought it to the ground, it would count as a legal submission.

However, if someone attempts a bent armlock whilst standing, this is illegal, as there is no control over the opponents body/hips, which has a much higher potential for injury.
if you're on your back and they're at the side, making a right angle with you.
    Side Control
and you try and shrimp your way to escape by rolling to one side, can they punch you in this exposed back? it would be similar to being in turtle, can they punch your back. obviously can't attack spine but aronnd that area?

You can punch to the ribcage and back, but you are not allowed to directly attack the spine. If the ref deems the shot to be dangerous/too close to the spine, he'll inform you to watch your target areas. Repeated violations could lead to a warning/DQ

The question about the standing submissions vs. the rear naked choke/guillotine is normally addressed in the rules meeting before the competition starts, its a common (good) question!

As has been said a couple of times in this thread already the emphsis is always on keeping everything safe and fun for the competitors.

Just wondering is there a superfight at the mma league this weekend?

also where is the "chum sat" club from and what exactly do they train in? They look like good strikers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,608 ✭✭✭breadmonkey

I think Mark Leonard said before that the superfights have been discontinued as they are not in the spirit of the competition.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 Alf_Wiggum

    pity.

breadmonkey, who you think would win in a rings fight, owen roddy or tim murphy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

They're from the Belfast area, and they train in MMA essentially.

Why are you asking an off topic question to one person on a thread? If you want to start a speculation thread, feel free to do so.

    Colm

Spot on Breadmonkey! We have decided to stop the whole Superfight idea, the League is about beginners getting a chance to try out MMA and having fun doing it, the place for Superfights is in the full rules shows like Ring of Truth or the Ultimate Fighting Revolution.

Drive through Donneybrook and continue along the road (N11). Go past RTE and about 1km later you will get to a bridge. Take the slip road off the left so you can go right over the bridge. This will bring you into Belfield. Follow the road in Belfield and you will eventually get to the sports centre - its on the far side from where u entered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,608 ✭✭✭breadmonkey

You will almost certainly get lost. However, once you get to Belfield, just head for the water tower. You can't possibly miss it.
