paying VAT/import duty on returned goods??

I bought an item from the states about a month ago which was delivered by Fedex. I returned the item as i didn't like it. However I've now received an invoice from Fedex looking for import charges. Do i have to pay these now even though i returned the item to the country of origin? Any help is appreciated.
