Broken Laptop

I have this laptop right, which is a packard bell (big mistake, i know), any how, it was almost destroyed in a domestic dispute of sorts, but, curious as to whether it still functions, i plugged my desktop screen into the monitor port and stunningly it still works.

Now its not a great machine, but, 2.8, 512, 40GB blah, blah, blah

is it worth getting it fixed, the screen is broken and currently only connceted by a wire or something, oh and the cd/dvd no longer works, that said i think there might be a little life in her yet, certainly even as a hand to a younger sibling to appolgies for the fact that i see them about 10 times a year.

Any, can i get a replacement case, can you recommend a person to do this, can i get a new screen, what price would i be looking at for it all, and is it worth it in your opinion.

    also, the battery..........F*****

usually screens are expensive to replace. I'm going guess it will cost ~€500.

Someone else might have their 2c on this?

    yeah that would be cool.

i guess, if its in the guide lines of acceptable behaviour on the site, im tendering the job to some one who could do this.

i was thinking that maybe i could be a new shell for it or something.

    Discuss.

philius, to be honest man, with you needing a screen & a battery there's no way I'd get it fixed unless you can somehow get it done on warranty.....

as was said the screen will be the most expensive & duno if your brave enough to install yourself, if you've never done one it's not too handy.

anyway I'd recommend you sell off the parts & get yourself another one, either new or used with used being preferred costwise.

    hmmm......
    warranty.

i reckon warranty wouldnt cover it getting trashed about.

you reckon 500 for the screen.

maybe if i found someone who had a similar computer, but was selling parts or something, i could replace them

    i dunno,

its just something worth checking out.

to be honest i think it would be cheaper to buy a new one.

I think I saw a thread somewhere else where someone was quoted 650 to replace the screen. All depends on availability of stock etc...

It's not worth getting repaired properly, so what i'd do...

Make a small case for it. Place inside case with power adapter. Buy 2.5"->3.5" adapter and buy full sized DVD writer.
    Use as tiny desktop :)

thats great, i actually have a desk top anyway that is a better machine, so its not a priority. 650 is a lot of money to replace the screen actually.

its just for gigs and stuff, hauling around a desktop is a load of s***

how much would i get a laptop of the same spec for second hand?

and then what about selling the parts of the laptop i had.

    all advice appreciated.

I'm looking to build a silent & small download rig, so I might be interested in the parts from your laptop, if it was the right price :)

A similar laptop second hand is about the €4-500 mark I think

ok, can you keep an eye out for something decent along my lines?, and i will bring the hunk of s***, i mean, the old beauty to your doorstep and you can pick it apart like some sort of electronic vulture.

mem, hard drive, decent video card, 4 usbs, network card, and 2.8g processer are all in order, so you could easily pull something out.

the battery, as i mentioned, is a joke.

sounds good....will talk to you tomorrow about a fair price for the parts, after discussing it with my accountants of course.:D

Dell sometimes have €700-800 laptop deals . I know someone who got three options on replacement screens on an IBM - €400 difference between the cheapest and dearest - all the same resolution.

I keep saying it, the price of a new screen on a laptop over a year old is usually more than you could sell the laptop for.

have a look on ebay for a similar laptop to get an idea of what yours is worth.

another option would be to buy an LCD monitor and use it as a desktop.

you need to make sure the models match if you want to pickup a doner laptop for the screen , one that someone spilt a cup of coffee over the keyboard might suffice.
