Im trying to install Ubuntu on a blank partition with XP on another. Could somebody recommend a bootloader which is simple enough to install?

Ubuntu installs Grub by default AFAIK, and gives the option for LILO..why choose something else?
    Grub.

Ubuntu should install GRUB by default (with LILO as a backup option). I use GRUB as it's less temperamental and you can edit it's boot options on the fly if you have problems. You also don't need to update your MBR it every time you change your config - it reads the menu.lst file on the fly. The only situation where GRUB might be an issue is if your boot partition is on an XFS filesystem.

    Edit: *snap*

No prob. - Grub will generally be easier on you. Most (All major and even not-so-major) distro's will provide a bootloader. remember to backup your XP partition's important information first..just in case & best of luck :)

One more thing. Do you know of any free programs I can use to create the second partition?

    partitionmagic

If you have a blank unpartitioned space on your HDD you can just use that and Ubuntu will create the partition for you with the swap space.

Ubuntu does fairly much all the complicated stuff itself

GRUB. You can do cool stuff like splash images and network booting.
