John Maughan is the perfect manager for Roscommon, it's exactly what ye need at this stage.

Yer players have been a bloody disgrace for the last 5 years, and it's a few early mornings, and laps of the field that's needed.

If he gets them fit and motivated (which are his strengths) he'll leave you in better shape.

I bet Roscommon put in a good championship season.

I never eally understood why he was so disliked in Mayo, as I think he had a pretty good record with them. I think this could be a fairly good appointment for Roscommon, do not think there would be many managers out there interested in working with Roscommon at the minute.

Long story Waylander, tactically very poor, but a couple of personal issues with a couple of key players led to break up in team spirit, and non-selection of some of our best players.

There's a guy playing Full Forward for Ballina who would (IMO) make the Kerry, Tyrone or Armagh teams, but his surname is Brady.

Austin O'Malley was another classic case in point.

The team were finished as a unit, like any bad marraige, better they go their own ways.

As I said, I'm sure he'll be a success at Roscommon, they need shaking up.

maughan will get the rossies back up and running again and all the negativve publicity that surrounds him isn't right.

He took a mayo team that was no were near good enough to win an all-ireland to the final and has to be commended for that

I've seen Roscommon beat teams like Kildare 2 years ago.

I think Maughan would be a good motivator and he'll get Roscommon to beat teams like Leitrim and Sligo if they improve under his reign as manager.I'd imagine they would dish out better performances in the playoffs under Maughan.Going by what he has done for Mayo,I can't think of a better manager.Only Sean Boylan would be a good contender for a replacement.

Mchurl, you're entitled to your opinion, and I mine.
Mayo had the best squad of players in 96 & 97 without any doubt, and left two All-Irelands behind them, mainly due to poor touchline management.

We also have about 8 or 9 players who are better than the existing players who have not been selected due to friction within the county.

I wish Maughan the best and Roscommon the best, I think it's an excellent appointment for both parties.

P.S Any of you guys going to the GPA bash next weekend?

i do agree that maughan is probably the best rossies can hope for, most the players need to know that the manager wont take any crap and i maughan has been pretty good at that over the years, i do agree that tactically hes not the best and thats why im sceptical over his appointment, we lack the talent to go far and tactically is how we need to make most of our strengths.

if he gets us out of division 2 and wins 2championship games then he would be excelling himself next seasion

I believe Paudi O Se has thrown his name into the hat for this job also, so Maughan has some competition for the post now.

well despite third man tackles world exclusive he has the job, starting trial games very soon apparently so hopefully some new quality blood can be brought into the panel, believe it or not there is some in roscommon, not an awful lot but more than has been on show last year. im talking players in their 20s not necessarly minors that are too young/light to play senior county

Roscommon have plenty footballers, they just need to be kept off the soup after they receive the age of 16.

If Maughan gets all these fellahs pulling in the right direction and fit (which is his strength) Roscommon will be an incredibly hard team too beat. Eamon McManus is a tremendous addition to the managemnet team.

Put it this way, they seem to be determined to put their house in order, if the players respond, the tough as teak mentality the Rossies used to have in the 70's and 80's will make them a formidable team.

Well I have to say I'm surprised with Maughan's appointment.

I thought someone from withing the county might get it.

Some clubs will be a bit pissed about him getting the job when he wasn't even nominated by a club.

Still, if he gets us back up to Division 1 and pulling together as a team then we are capable of competiting in the top 10 teams.

As for whether we have the players? Well, there's plenty of players around the county who will be looking at this fresh start as a way of finally getting a fair chance of making the panel and team

I think times will be brighter for ye ;) . As Culchie said, if he gets the players fit and off the sauce they'll be a hard team to beat. There's no better fitness coach in intercounty football than Maughan imho. In fairness to him, he's a good motivator as well. Connaught could be interesting next year. I can't wait for the draw on Friday.

Interesting that one of his first actions is to omit Francie Grehan, Shane Curran and Frankie Dolan from the 2006 panel. Is this merely laying the law down to some of the senior players, or is there already serious trouble brewing here?

There has to be a clear out Waylander.
The players have let Roscommon down badly, and like the soup too much off the field.

I'l admit I'm surprised about Curran, Curran is 34/35 now though, so maybe they have a young keeper up and coming. His Club is through to the Connaught Final, so that might be another factor.
The other two whilst fantastic footballers on their day, have been reluctant to train and keep on the dry. They also hold quite a hold on the younger players, and any new entrants to the panel.

In the dressing room after Roscommon beat London by a point, a Roscommon selector (ex player) came into the dressing room and said

" Right Lads, that was the worst Roscommon display I've seen in 25 years. We've Mayo in 2 weeks time, and I think we can beat them. Lads, let's give ourselves a fair shot at this. Let's stay off the beer for just 2 weeks, and give Mayo everything we've got"

He got laughed out of the dressing room. I heard that story from a reliable source before the Mayo/Roscommon match this year.

where as it may be maughan laying down the law it might be that these players or so called "stars" may have asked for a few months off while maughan was trying to get a squad together, alot of these men hav been playing alot of football last few years( except for last year!!!) and may have asked for a rest......some for genuine reasons and others because they are so used to calling the shots the last few yrs that the still think they can do what they want!

i suspect they may get longer time off than they thought.

oh and i think dolan and dineen are going to australia for few months anyway

jasus! I cant believe it really. In any of the top counties the best players in the county are on the panel. I know F dolan is a lunatic at times but I honest ly think a lot of it could be sorted with a manager that is prepared to develop proper relationships with the players instead of bawling !!

I just think its an awful shame that F Dolan wont be playing intercounty next yr. Might be a case of if only tho.

For a fact there is noone in the county who can score 7points in every championship game guaranteed. Thats what every county needs and I dont know where its gonna come from this year. lets hope k mannion brings his club form with him.
