Question...

I had an interview last week(company A) and i'm supposed to be hearing from them either tomorrow or thursday, the thing is I have two more interviews(B+C) lined up for tomorrow. Out of the three, the company I want to work for (C) is interviewing me tomorrow and they pay the best too, but if company A offers me a job in the next two days should I accept it to cover my *ss if I mess up the interviews tomorrow?

The thing is I dont want to accept the job from company A if I can get the job with company C - which I want more. Is it acceptable to take the job from A then if company C offers me the job a few days later, quit job A? If I was to accept a job over the phone, I assume that since I didnt sign a contract that legally I would have no problem quitting without giving them notice.

Any help/opinions appreciated, as you can see im new to most of this.

You accept the job from A verbally, and then offput the signing of the contact until you hear whats heppening with C.

If C offers you a job you can honestly say that you have been offered a more attractive job by C with more money etc etc, and that while you like company A you must be realistic and accept C.

If C doesn't offer you a job, then you pretend they never existed and work for A.

I'd avoiding taking a call from A as long as possible. You never know if you might need to go back to them sometime in the future and it never pays to burn your bridges.

i wouldn't avoid the call, they may be calling to tell you bad news, in which case you need to know it. if they offer you the job you do have a few days to play with before you accept it, if they offer you the job they aren't going to retract the offer if you don't say yes straight away, if you want to drag it out give it a few days and then ask for a little more money or holidays or whatever and let them go off and come back to you. meanwhile push job C as hard as you can for a decision.

as for accepting in verbally, if you do that you've accepted it. depending on the position you may never sign a contract or if you do it would be the day you start. As vector says you can of course then shaft company A but just because you haven't signed a contract doesn't make it right. As ricardo says that is really burning bridges and people don't forget that kind of thing...

It dosen't matter until you have signed a contract. Pulling out after a verbal commitment may piss people off but tell them the truth about company C... i.e. better offer etc.

Just admit that you have another interview coming up and you would like to honour that before you make a decision.

I've done it - companies generally respect you for being honest with them.

Personally, if offered job A, I'd ask for a couple of days just to think it over. I've done this in the past and the company has never had a problem with it. It would be unreasonable of a company to expect a decison on such an important matter straight away.

In my opinion this is the correct answer. Why tells lies and/or half truths when you can tell the truth? If A think you are the best candidate for the job they will wait a few days before retracting and offering to the next best candidate. I'd make it clear to C that you have another offer on the table - focuses the mind.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I will go with WizZard's advice on this one. Should be hearing from both company A anc C tomorrow with B ringing me on friday. Interviews went well so my fingers are crossed.

Good news, company C got back to me before anyone else and offered me the job! I start monday.
