Any free programs out there that can convert from avi format to DVD? Obviously it will not be original DVD quality, but want to do this so that downloaded avi movies can be played in a DVD player.

The Nero that came with your dvd recorder will probably do it for you.

    Winavi will do the job.

personally, i prefer convertingto an intermediate MPEGII using main concept encoder.

I then author the DVD using TMPGenc DVD Author. Ulead is also meant to be excellent for authoring.

I find this process is more stable than a direct conversiona nd usually outputs higher quality results.

Ok this is getting annoying, every week this question is asked. :(

It really wouldn't kill people to use the search function on the page page or to even goto page 2 of the computer board

    Search results: http://www.google.com/search?domains=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.boards.ie&sitesearch=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.boards.ie&q=avi+to+dvd&submit=Search

My personal suggestion for a program to perform this task, Divx2DVD made by vsosoftware

    Thanks for the replies.

Maybe an addition to the Essential Free Software Sticky is possible?
Found DVD to avi there, but not vice-versa (excellent list of software though).

The beauty of the boards community is that people can ask questions like this and get straight answers from informed people. Google no doubt will turn up the answer, but people at the boards are so much more direct and helpful :)

I'd recommend the divx2DVD aswell but beware - use the registered version unless you want a URL across the top of all your DVD's!!!! I found this out the hard way..

    hehe, I noticed that alright,
Very annoying for somebody to waste a few hours transcoding something to DVD only to find they can't watch it.

I was doing the converting of espisodes of lost on a 500mhz P3!! Took 10 hours each!! took me a week to do four to fill a dvd only to find that the link was on it.

Hence my new sig - that was the last straw. 1700 quid later, they take 15 minutes. :D

    Yeh I use this too

Look for the link on the page (when you GOOGLE for it) to the old version, it's free and doesn't have the banner over it...

Much less options and less supported but it still does the trick

    I'm just after buying a new PC but on a 2k budget, 2GB ram and a 3700+
I'm curious to see how long it'll take me to encode to dvd, I encoded 5 eps of lost in 5-6 hours on my current PC

by the way, why no lcd?

Where is the Search function though? Last time it was there and I tried it it just crapped out on me...

Now it just isn't there anymore.
