Is anyone elses head wrecked by companies copying each other in advertising?? Take the latest Wholegrain b**locks. One of them started off banging on about wholegrain being good for you and now they are all at it. Every cereal add you see goes on about whole grain being soooo good for you and how we should feed it to kids. has the nanny state now invaded our breafast cereals?? Are we not able to eat good ol coco pops anymore?? personally I now go out of my way to buy any cereal that ISNT whole bloody grain.!!!! I dont want my ceral to be packed full of oat stalks in fact I dont care if its good for me at all.

Is this wrecking anyone elses head or is it just me!????

god yeah that does my head in aswell. I blame danone for starting it all. Now every yogurt out there has lactius-randomus-bacterious in it lol. personally I dont think that having one million bacteria in my yogurt is a good thing - i dont care if they are "friendly" ;-)

Yes it is quite annoying... Most of them just make up these stupid things that we supposedly can't digest our food properly without... Lkasia Immunitass?? Bifidus Assenses?? WTF???

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,146 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

I'm not sure if it was Danone that started it or Loreal though. Once they decided that shampoo had to have some technically fantastic sciencey crap in it to make you hair smell better, we then had to have these stupidly named things in our food as well.

its hilarious ...last month it was healthiest for us to eat the frosties with a third less sugar now it has to be whole grain - do companies really think we are that stupid?? do you remember the fad for orange scented furniture wipes/ bathroom cleaner lol. and as for shampoo - what is a provitamin B5. and how is a provitamin different to a regular vitamin??

and why on earth does ones hair need any bleeding vitamins, its dead cells and no amount of vitamins is going to bring it back to life.

Well to be honest about this cereal thing i tend to agree, it's just a new fad for these Cereal companies so they can charge u an extra 2 quid for a box of cereal which is completely stupid in my opinion, & if u look at all these new dairy products like 'Benecol' which is meant to reduce peoples colestrol (please excuse my spelling) & they feel that people can afford to pay nearly 6 quid for a tub of butter!!
    Why can't prices be regulated??:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

if people were really so concerned about there colesterol they wouldnt be eating any butter at all!!?

I was just making the point that these new ideas that companies come up with to make more money out of us really:D

It just makes them feel less guilty about eating the butter, like the fat cow who orders the large Big Mac meal with Diet Coke!!

i keep getting givin out to for drinking diet coke, that its MUCH worse for me than coke...i simply dont like the taste of coke, simple as!! and i love my white bread..nothing will get me to eat wholegrain / brown bread!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

totally i agree with ya! ;-) my mate bought shampoo for 50cent from lidl and it was lovely were all out of our box paying 3 quid for a bottle

yea nothing wrong with it imo!! i was getting a 2L bottle of DIET coke for something like 40c..how sweet is that!!!!!

I think it was actually Nurofen (or one of those druggys) that started the "and heres the science bit" style.

No actually I remember now, it was some ad for a tablet that deconjested your nose.

That Benecol spread isn't butter so it isn't very bad for you. And the reason it costs an arm and a leg is that because it's one of the few products that actually does what it claims to do.

I agree that it's irritating being bombarded with all these new fangled grains, bacteria and the like all the time but it's a bit stupid just stubbornly refusing to eat healthily just to spite them.

I agree. Take it from me, wholegrain condoms are not all they are cracked up to be.

    Yes, yes they do,
The average consumer is a sheep and will often follow adverts because they *think* a product is great

All these fancy shampoos and their ads annoy me.
Hair is DEAD. Also, "to repair split ends"- split ends cannot be repaired!
The only way to fix split ends is to cut them off!

Also, these shampoos that are supposed to give volume, make your hair thicker, sleeker, etc- that's what MOUSSE, etc is for. Shampoo is for CLEANING your hair. Nothing else. Next thing you know, Fairy Liquid will be able to give volume to your dishes...

As of healthy - I don't like the Rice Krispies "We're here to right a wrong, mums" ad. Yeah right... If you want healthy Rice Krispies, throw some into a bowl of proper musli!

That bandwagon took a while to get going - the patent on shredded wheat ran out 95 years ago.

Interesting that someone mentioned shampoo. Before P&G started advertising Pentene like crazy in the mid to late 90s it was a very small brand in localised markets. Five years of big big advertising made it the biggest selling shampoo on the plenet. The shampoo didn't change, just the advertising. Of course my lovely and charming girlfriend says that it's very good and I've no reason to disbelieve her as her hair spends significantly more time being longer than an inch than mine does. Personally I buy whatever's going 3 for 2 or 2 for 1 in Tesco at any given time, assuming I haven't bought the cheapass stuff in Lidl. I'm reminded vaguely of some scientific study done a few years ago, which I'm too lazy to look for right now, where they concluded that the cheap as chips stuff was as good as all of the major brands and better than most. Still, perhaps they were just checking whether the hair was clean rather than being revitalised to the point where it could bugger off to Oxford and complete a Masters by itself.

I'm still waiting for some honest advertising campaigns. "Fig Rolls - help you crap" and the like. None of this "Charmin - makes your bum feel very special" rubbish (Want your bum to feel special? Give it a good clean and buy yourself a cushion). Mind you I could do without putting up with another Stira advert from El Cheapo Advertising Productions Limited.

i use a popup and ad blocker while on the net

the rare times i turn on the tv, i immediately switch it off during ads, that includes those annoying voices during the credits

i mute the sound during radio ad breaks while driving

i intentionally never focus on billboards, or newspaper ads

an ad free life is possible :p

The messages on the showergel / shampoo bottles always gives me a laugh. What will it be today? A revitalizing radox herbal wash, or will I stimulate myself with lemon zest?

Give me a feckin bar of soap to be honest.

And feck right of with your PH balancing.

if i buy something its because I like how it tastes or because it works. i really dont care ho wmuch crap they have put into it ;-) its like mcdonalds trying to sell healthy food lets be honest people if you really wanted to be healthy - you wouldnt be eating in mcdonalds.
if i was that concerned about my ceral being good for me id be eating shreeded wheat - i just want my rice crispies to taste good dammit !! ;-)

beware the diet coke though its really bad for you - full of chemicals!!

It's quite amazing that with all of us knowing full well that Biffidus-e-bollix is a load of marketing hype, that there are still "2 million Irish people" buying that crap (Glanbia actually complained to the ASAI about that little statistic, and it was upheld). I know of at least two people who actually do start the day with an Actimel, and they believe it is a perfectly healthy and adequate breakfast

The best ad I thought though was the shampoo ad (could have been Pantene) that claims to make your hair 5 times "shinier". How the hell do you measure the shine of hair, with a shine-o-meter? The small print at the foot of the ad says something like "based on a self-assessment by 100 women" or something like that. I'd loved to have seen the survey form.

Q1. After using Pantene, how more shiny was your hair? (Select closest value)
    A 5x shinier
    B 1,000x shinier
    C 1,000,000x shinier

    Q2. Are you a moron?
    A Yes
    B No

Q3. No seriously, are you a moron?
    A Yes

So the morale of the story is never believe anything you see/hear in an ad. It's their job to sell you more products than you actually want or need. If toothpaste manufacturers thought they'd get away with it then I'm sure "dentists" would be recommending that you brush your teeth 25 times a day.

So eat your Rice Krispies, with full fat milk and two spoons of sugar. Why? Because you want to.

yup and whats really maddening is that once one brand does it - they all do it! remember when every kitchen cleaner suddenly contained 'real lemon juice' lol id rather mine contained bleach... and every juice suddenly had to have a sugar free version! and now its bifidus-randomus and whole grain lmao

The whole grain thing might be an attempt to regain sales lost during the Atkins' Diet, anti-carb fad. Although I don't think that fad ever really took off in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,915 ✭✭✭Siogfinsceal

lol you coul dbe right. I could never do any of those diets i can never figure out which foods are carbs and which are protein etc - waaaay to complicated !
