    Hi,
I bought my laptop on 3/8/05 and from that point I had 90 days to take our the 3 year extended warranty which covers accidental damage and screen damage too I think. So I basically have to make a decision by the end of today whether I should take out the warranty or not. It's going to cost €114.95 including VAT + delivery and I have been given it below cost price. Do you reckon this is a necessity or a gimmick to get more money? I don't really have the cash to spare but if it's definitely worth it I will do it. Just like to get some feedback first. If I did damage it, spill a glass of water over the keyboard, desk falls apart, etc etc.. how much do average laptop repairs cost and are they far more complicated than pc repairs?

    Any feedback appreciated, thanks:)

Myself, I have always done without.

Most laptops are made from parts that can't be got from anyone but the manufacturer, or a scrap machine, other than the DVD, memory and harddrive.

If it's a 'desktop replacement' laptop that will be ferried from desk to desk most of the time, away from kids, and you avoid eating/drinking over it then you can do without.

If you intend to use it on the move, in living room, allow kids to use it then it might be worth paying. If the warrenty company are decent. Can't really be definitive, cause it depends on you and them. Count the dents on your mobile?
Or post name of company and get boards opinion of their repairs.

Find out for sure if it covers damage to the screen. If it does, it may be worth it, as usually a broken screen means you will have to:

    a) throw out the laptop and get a new one
    b) find the same model second hand/scrapped and take the screen off it
    c) pay extortionate amounts to the manufacturer for repair/replacement

A friend of a friend in college broke his Dell latitude screen... Costed about €750 to replace it.

I have a Dell Laptop and the screen went on it two weeks ago. They sent DHL out to collect it on the Thursday and I had it back on the Monday, they had to replace the screen. It just went out of the blue. Didn't fall or anything.

God knows how much it would have cost but dell fixed it for free.
For a laptop, definitely get the warranty.

Hmmm I don't want to be stung with the possibility of having to fork out €750 out of the blue. My laptop is quite important to me. It isn't around kids but I do generally eat and drink over it. It's mainly a desktop replacement but will also be used on the move some times too. If I ever decided to upgrade, is the warranty transferable within the 3 years to a new owner?

It's an Acer laptop so I presume Acer are the warranty company??

For a laptop, i would get it. If anything goes ater the 1 year, its gonna cost quite a bit to replace.

After 1 year, the warranty will be with whoever provides the extended warranty service. For example, PC Worlds 3/4/5 year warranties are handled by a company called mastercare.

You'll have to read the small print. :D

1 tiny tip: Don't eat, & especially drink over the laptop!
You know it's wrong, why do you do it then??

Just got feedback that Acer do all their own warranty repairs so it will be with Acer. Waiting for confirmation of screen damage and if so I'll take it, thanks for the advice:)

In fairness, given your luck with laptops, I'd be taking any extra warranties I could get my hands on. Hell, I'd even take out volcano insurance on it, if I could find someone selling it. :)

I personally would rather have the peace of mind, especially if you rely on the laptop. It's not that much money for 3 years of cover, and laptops are very vulnerable bits of kit - one little jolt, one drop of OJ in the wrong place could spell doom.

hehe yeah:) I'm going to go for it anyway:) Thanks for the advice everyone! More money going into into la la land!

Its a laptop, not a desktop. Those parts are not easily replaceable by you. I'd gladly pay €150+ for a 3 year warrenty knowing that if anything'd happen, it'd be guarenteed.
