Yeah I dislike it because of its entirely commercial nature. While I understand it's a little bit of fun for the small children, I think it's otherwise another cynical marketing strategy. Besides, if you really think about it, should a staunchly Catholic country like Ireland celebrate it (considering its Pagan roots).

Note - I'm not a Catholic, just using it in reference to make a point.

its simply a holiday that some people enjoy. not to sure whay people would hate it due to the overly commerical aspect of it (you may as well stay in your bed with your pillow over your head in that case)

theres always a good movie or two on. of course, it helps if you like horror movies :)

the resting yes but all the scumbags pi$$ me off

Hated it as a kid, hate it even more now. All that dressing up lark and going round scabbing from the neighbours always p*ssed me off. Now, it's the industrial quantities of fireworks that are let off from the end of September to mid-November that bug me. Just what's gone off in my neck of the woods tonight must be measurable in megatons

Halloween is the greatest holiday in the entire year. It's much more fun than Christmas and not as commercialised (yet :().

    Christmas + a murder scene = Halloween :D

Edit: I haven't actually heard many fireworks in the run-up to Halloween this year, compared to previous years.

I wish they'd stfu with the explosives out there... although it gives me an excuse to drown it out with loud music.

It's like a bloody warzone out there. If I'd wanted to experience big noises and flashy lights I'd damn well play pinball or watch a video on Israel, not get my hands on a load of dodgy illegal explosives that have nearly as much chance of removing my extremities as going WHOOSH and BANG, and occasionally (and this is the big hit for all those miserable sponge-for-brains motcheens) CRACKLE.

Maybe it's because I'm stuck at work and missing what would have been a pleasent night in a friend's house eating nuts, cake, apples, and Indian food while playing City Of Villains, but:

    God's crotch, I hate Halloween.

It's great when you're a kid. Throwing eggs and flour and toilet paper and all that junk. And all those sweets. NYOMAGE!

now though, well, lets just say you should have seen some of the costumes the ladies were wearing at the party I was at on Sat. Holy ****socks Batman! Costume parties are a good laugh. I like horror movies too, went to see Saw2 last night.

I like Haloween, ****s on easter.

I'm 50/50 on it. Halloween's ok if your a kid, or you have a decent party to go to. The overt commercialisation is annoying. TV is dire as usual. If you've kids its kinda fun seeing the kick they get out of it. The amount of fireworks, and the size of some of them are staggering. Theres some pretty lethal stuff being launched tonight. Bet the army are sitting there jealous as hell. :D

Pity they are not organised better. In germany you see some amazing firework shows at the festivals. Not just at Halloween.

    Ah so I'm not alone...

The fireworks just stopped here after 6 hrs of constant ordnance. It;s like a f*ckin' pissin' contest between all the idiots letting them off...
Love to know how they can afford to burn so much money into pretty colours and noise whilst livin' in a council estate.

I used to like this time of year when I was a kid...it didn't have as much of this whole yank vibe to it or something. I mean won't someone think of the pumpkins?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,309 ✭✭✭RVN10

ya like where do they get all that money just to burn it away for like 2seconds of fun?

I couldn't give less of a shít about this 'holiday'. Tonight we drove around in my friends car and egged a few young 'uns, but that was about it and I was home by 12. Couldn't care less, I'm completely indifferent about this holiday, it's just another night out but with nowhere to go

Lollers! The whole Hallowe'en thing is a bit mad alright! Haunted lollers!

I dispise the fireworks going off at 2am every night for about three weeks before halloween. its like the civil war has started up again in the city or something.

Also hate the little brats knocking on yoru door going "anything for halloween" every five minutes. give it a couple of weeks they will come round and try to sing cristmas carrols at your door, then they will be round again after christmas with a dead bird. then they come again in the spring for the "wood for the bonfire on may 1st, then they come for the "communion collection". Why dont they pester someone else. all we need is one more day for little brats to be getting you up to answer the door when your trying to watch telly.

It is always the first weekend when it is pitch black outside earlier in the evening, which can be depressing.

would you throw stuff at passers by on a normal day. the fact that you only do it on halloween means that you are not as indifferent to the occasion as you say.

Do you use stale eggs or fresh eggs? I personally prefer stale eggs. :D Do you take precautions like removal of number plates from the car?

I would actually have good reason to hate Halloween as my grandfather died on Halloween when I was 11. And I detest the crap with the fireworks and eggs, I don't see the attraction of ruining the night (6 week period from oct1 to half way through nov) for everyone else. But other than that it is one of my favourite holidays.

Up to 700 years ago Halloween was the biggest festival in the country. Samhain was the Celtic new year, commorating the death of the sun. The day was considered to not actually be part of the rest of the year and because of this the dead were believed to have the power to visit earth. People would give offerings to the "ghosts and spirits" who might visit in the hope that the visit would be benevolent. In some areas the poor would dress as demons and take the offerings. That is where trick or treating comes from, it is not an American thing. It is Irish and British. It was brought to America by Irish immigrants.
