Self-booting PC - help please

    Hi,

Maybe someone can help with this. My father's home pc is booting itself every 5 mins. Not sure if this is being caused by a virus or a hardware problem. When I get to the pc, I'll be running some virus scan (AVG, XSoftpy), but if they don't show up anything, I'm wondering what the possible hardware fault could be.

Overheating of the chip might be one I know, but are there any other faults that can cause self-reboots?

    Appreciate any replies.

    D.

"booting" or rebooting issue? Please clarify.

Please, also include the hardware spec. / OS / whether it's connected to a network, etc.

Rebooting - system will be powered on and running for 5 mins or so, and will just reboot itself.

I'm not at the system now, but from what i remeber it's a 2.4G P4 on a P4P800 mobo running Win2k Prof........The system worked fine a couple of months back.

Isn't that another one of the Sasser worms side effects?, rebooting your computer unannounced?

My friend had a similar problem, and it was due to the temp sensor in the motherboard going insane and over reading the temps, and thus shutting the PC down. This was fixed by disabling the shut down on overheat option in the bios.

Otherwise, its probably a virus. Kaspersky have a good online scanner which'll tell you if you have a problem :)

is it giving a message with a countdown timer on it before it reboots? if so its a virus. If not then the CPU (or something else) is overheating and causing it to reboot.

Does it happen if you leave it sitting in BIOS, or in Safe Mode?
Added any new hardware or software recently?

Thanks for the repies folks...I haven't got near teh system yet and will only be trying to help fix it over the phone.
I'll try the XSoftspy and AVG first....Does the Kaspersky online scanner work well on dial-up??
Not sure yet about the different situations where it reboots (Safe, BIOS etc)..I do remember that it was rebooting when he tried to print something, or when he ran a game - maybe that points to an overtemp problem.
What should be the average CPU temp for a 2.8 P4.
And no new hardware added for quite a while.
