Replacement laptop hard-drive ?

So every few days my laptop's hard-drive has started making funny clicking noises, everything then slows down, and then for some reason a reboot gets everything back to normal.

Am pretty sure the drive is on it's last legs so I'm in need of a replacement.

It's a 60gb, 7200 rpm Hitachi which has served me well, and ideally the replacement would have similar specs. If anyone's spotted any good deals, I'd greatly appreciate it. I also only have an american credit card & therefore am limited to certain stores ...

Any help would be appreciated !

eBay is a relatively decent option for something like this....most good sellers take paypal which will take your US card...

Worth checking the laptop/disk manufactures website first. I had a dell inspiron and the disk used to make funny noises... found that dell had a firmware update and she's purred since.

Well ... the drive that came with the laptop died completely after 1 year. I've had this one for 2 years. Am a pretty heavy user so I think it's fair to say that I've killed it.

How have people's experiences been with Overclockers UK ? Have my eye on the 60 gig Western Digital there ...

Ive used them in the past - they're fine but postage can be a bit hefty. Try Dabs.com

Firstly, back up your data NOW.

Next, check if the disk is still in warranty. Hitachi generally give 3 year warranties on their 3.5" IDE disks, I'd assume its the same for laptop ones. They replaced a 3.5" one for me quick enough with only a month left on the warranty

Their website (http://www.hgst.com) should have a page where you can enter your drive's serial number, and it'll tell you whether its still in warranty or not.

So I bought a drive off Dabs last wednesday. They sent me an e-mail saying it'd been dispatched that same day. Still hasn't arrived, though. Is that normal ? In the e-mail it said to expect delivery in 1-3 days. Just wondering when I should start to worry that the package has been lost ...

if its coming from the UK give it 2 weeks. An post are sh1te are delivering parcels from UK at the mo. They're on a unofficial go slow work policy.

I think all postal services are slow at the moment. I ordered something from shop4memory on sunday & it arrived on wednesday, even though I paid for DHL next day (didnt expect it monday, but it was needed for tuesday).
I wouldnt be worried yet.

DHL isn't postal. And if you paid the extra money to get next day delivery and it didn't arrive i'd look for my money back.

shop4memory.com are quite good at delivery. I use their free delivery option (via An Post). Leaves Kildare and arrives in Dublin the next day. So don't see the point of paying for DHL.

Surprised DHL didn't have it for you on the Tues (assuming they picked it up on monday).

It was only a fiver, not worth the hassle. I paid for it due to the postal "strike".
