Myself and the girlfriend are heading off to india next july for a few months. Wondering has anyone been? Any tips/advice? Any recomendations on guide books we could read?

Neither of us has been travelling before so all advice would be appreciated. We plan on spending as little money as possible and don't mind roughing it at all.

You lucky things. India's an incredible country. Get ready for total sensory overload.

I found the Rough Guide to be better than the Lonely Planet. Pack as little as possible because everything is cheaply available there. That said, sturdy sandals are essential, and an inflatable neck rest and universal sink plug will come in handy. Don't bother bringing mosquito nets or sleeping bags.

I wished I'd brought a couple of rolls of 10c coins to give to the kids.

And if you don't want to get sick, don't eat any meat, and only drink bottled water.

A lot depends on where you're going, north or south?

Red Cordial is great for stomach upsets.
