    Riot Girl?

Could anyone give me more info's on this band?

Riot grrrl is both a genre of punk as well as a bit of a feminist movement. Typical examples would be Bratmobile and Bikini Kill

    ahh i see now

    Thanks for the info

Best thing to come out of America during the 1990s in my opinion. Refreshing, exciting and ingenius. Love it.

how come your so into riot grrrl anyhoo riotguy

isnt riot grrrl just a faster version of "Dyke-Rock" (hole, breeders)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 karate_feetus

Well I wouldn't say its "just 'dyke-rock'" although it is associated with the lesbian community. Um, I wouldn't really compare riot grrrl to hole or courtney love - after all Love did punch Kathleen Hanna that time. What was that all about? And since when have the breeders been dyke-rock??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

since kim deal was in it.

dont get me wrong, i love lesbians!

    and kim deal

oh yeah plus, Hole would be more associated as tomboy rock with bands like babes in toyland and L7 I think. Although all the bands from around that area and time are associated with each other... probably cause they were all attempting to encourage more girls and women to play music and get into a scene where they could belong.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 karate_feetus

Is kim deal gay? and... even if she was, I wouldnt class her music as dyke-rock or even compare them with hole. I mean they're really laid back, almost poppy

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 BlackArrow

I think the whole riot grrrl thing is cool. The whole idea is very punk. True riot grrrl bands have remained on small, unknown record labels etc. They try to promote female punk- which is good, 'cos, lets face it, it is still male dominated. It is a movement to promote equality in music.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 karate_feetus

well I suppose so are hole... at least their later stuff is

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 karate_feetus

yeah thats it. I mean, riot grrrls called for a media blackout when they were becoming darlings of the media. Its weird because with the 'death of riot grrl' came the arrival of the 'angry women in rock' like alanis morrisette and fiona apple etc, women musicians who agreed to censorship for radio play etc, who we're rebellious and cpompilant at the same time. Hole I think are the same, they really brushed up as they became more popular but the riot grrrls new when it had to end and yet retain their political dignity at the same time. Its kinda weird how Kathleen Hanna has now signed to Universal with Le Tigre, moving from radical lesbian lable Mr. Lady, but then again she has good reason.

Sorry havent had a chance to get online for a few days. Whoever it was that used the term dyke-rock should take a second and think about what they said!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭Riotguy

I used to love Hole(all their albums) now its just Pretty on the Inside I appreciate......the rest is pure pop and nothing else. Ya gotta love courtney but she is a sell-out as is the truly warped Ms. Kathleen Hanna. At least the rest of Bikini Kill kept it on with the frumpies and spider and the webs etc.

I love riot grrl, its my fav genre.L7 and Babes In Toyland are Grunge me thinks, Riot grrl as a genre is pretty sketchy, it could be Bratmobile and BikiniKill, maybe Hissyfits but the likes of Jack off Jill and Lunachicks are sometimes refered to as Riot Grrl...tis all good in my book.
Tis quite dyle music tbh tho, been to a few gigs and its well dodge, kinda like in 10 things i hate about you when they go to see letters to cleo... all girls in tank tops and no bra...shaven armpits...optional!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭Riotguy

YESSSAH! I know roisin. She's the only other person in wexford i know likes riot grrrl......although she now kinda prefers hardcore punk i think. Yeah i would prob class L7 as grunge(theyre a lot more distorted and abrasive) but not really Babes in Toyland......theyre grungier than a lot of other riot grrrl or fem-rock but still they sound kinda punky. Love both of em though!

Theres a habbit o patenting all girl bands or even bands with females in them with the lable 'riot grrrl'. Its a method of subsuming and undermining minority groups I think. In general.

I love and appreciate Kathleen Hanna. She is thee coolest person on this earth as far as I'm concerned. I think she has her reasons for signing to Universal. I mean, she said herself that she was so close to breakdown the last time she was involved with music and riot grrrl. They had to do all the work themselves. Now, she can concentrate on writing and enjoying the music. Although I say that, I'm not sure if I can truely understand her change or stance, but she's a very intelligent woman and she changed my life and the life of soooo many other people, so who am I to doubt her now? she a beast!

And I dunno about Courtney Love. I think yeah she was cool at one stage, but mostly shes disappointing and creepy. Although I do dig the majority of her music - shes not nearly as hardcore as Id like her to be but **** that. And I like the attitude she has to other gals and stuff, like handing out guitars to girls at gigs and saying 'and DON'T give it to your boyfriend'.

You peeps might like my band, Killateen.

We aint all girls, but we're very influenced by the riot grrrl 'method'. we'll be playing some gigs with the freebooters eventually (you may or may not know them) and hopefully before christmas with some other peeps (any takers).

We're definitely grunge driven, but some of the stuff is just crazy anti-singing etc. Its really fun. I think anybody who can appreciate Bikini Kill will like us.

i don't really understand what defines the riot girrrl genre. ilke early hole and bikini kill, but i'd probable class them as grunge- what seperates the genres? as for kim deal, she rules this world!

    from wikipedia

Riot grrrl (or riot grrl) is a form of hardcore punk rock music, known for its militant feminist stance. The genre first appeared in the early 1990s as an offshoot of alternative rock and punk music and as a response to prevalent attitudes of punk machismo, building also on a history of all-women bands. A key factor in this movement was the support for girls not needing to be musically trained to start a band.

The term more generally referred to the band members and followers of a wider movement with a DIY empowerment ethic, characterized by the Oxford English Dictionary as "feminist resistance to male domination in society and especially to the abuse and harassment of women." Riot grrrl lyrics often address issues such as rape, domestic abuse, sexuality and female empowerment. As summarized by The Guardian in its April 15, 1995 supplement:

When the Riot Grrl movement began in America in 1991, its intention was to redress the balance of power via the punk rock underground using slogans (words like ‘rape’ and ‘slut’ written in black marker pens on exposed stomachs or bare arms), fanzines, meetings and women-only shows.

The group Bikini Kill is widely considered one of the prime instigators of the movement. With the rallying cry, "Revolution Girl Style Now!" they and other bands like Bratmobile and Heavens to Betsy created a mini-movement to combat what they saw as the male-dominance of the punk scene and, by extension, the rest of the world.

Riot grrl musicians mostly shunned the major record labels, signing instead with indie labels like Kill Rock Stars.

    History

Like its contemporary, grunge music, riot grrrl arose in the fertile music scene of Seattle and Olympia as well as in Washington D.C, although it wasn't limited to these cities. Other scenes arose across the United States, and in the United Kingdom, represented by such groups as Huggy Bear and Voodoo Queens.

Historically, the term stems from the all-female opening night of the International Pop Underground convention in Olympia on August 20, 1991. It was coined by Alison Wolfe (of Bratmobile) in response to a comment by Jean Smith (of Mecca Normal) that, "We need to start a girl RIOT!"

Breaking out from the music, riot grrrl activities included national conventions in D.C., the Pussystock festival in New York City, and a slew of zines, notably Girl Germs, Fantastic Fanzine, Satan Wears A Bra and Quit Whining. Riot grrrl's momentum was supported by an explosion of self-published zines that covered a variety of feminist topics, frequently attempting to draw out the political implications of intensely personal experiences with sexism, mental illness, body image, sexual abuse, and homosexuality. These zines were archived for many years by Riot Grrrl Press, started in Washington DC in 1992 by Erika Reinstein & May Summer. Due to financial hardships, Riot Grrrl Press disbanded in the late 90's.

Much to their chagrin, the riot grrrls found themselves in the media spotlight during 1992, featured for dragging feminism into the mosh pit in magazines from Seventeen to Newsweek. This led to conflict within the riot grrrl community because many felt that "Riot grrrl" could not be defined; it meant too many things to too many people. Fallout from the media coverage led to resignations of people like Jessica Hopper, who was at the center of the Newsweek article. Riot grrrl leader Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill called that year for "a press block" and reporters from papers like The Seattle Times, The Washington Post, and Houston Chronicle found themselves fleshing out riot grrrl articles by describing exactly the way in which various scenesters hung up on them.

    Legacy

Since most riot grrrl bands weren't very prolific, the movement's initial spark of enthusiasm faded after a few years, but it still continues to play a role in Indie rock culture. The movement's legacy lives on in bands such as Sleater-Kinney and in girl-positive independent music festivals such as Ladyfest.

Many of the women involved in Riot Grrrl are still active today. Kathleen Hanna is a member of Le Tigre, Kathi Wilcox is in the Casual Dots, and Bratmobile reunited in 2000 and have since released two albums. Mainstream media outlets have been proclaiming the death of Riot Grrrl for the last ten years but the musicians and spirit of the movement endures today.

It's our first gig and it kinda came out of the blue so it could be really good or crazily bad, but its fun music and its such a small place, it'll be a good crowd. Anybody interested, or looking for more information can PM me.
