Ethernet Hub with Cayman 3341

I have a PC and a MAC connected to this device. I'm with Eircom Broadband about a year and a half now.

I want to connect another PC using an Ethernet Hub, but when I went into a shop in Parliament St. today in the pi**ing rain, the guy told me a Hub wouldn't work. He said I'd need a router, even though there was an illustration on the back of the box which showed a connection to a modem.

I since looked up information on the Cayman 3300 series and it clearly says you can connect an Ethernet Hub to service other computers.

Can anyone tell me who's telling the truth here?

A Hub, or a Switch, is used to connect computers together. A Router is needed if you want to share an internet connection between the computers (not strictly true, but nevermind that). The DSL modem you got off Eircom has a Router inbuilt - just connect it to the hub/switch as well. The guy in the shop was wrong.

He was right in that you do need a router, you can't just plug a modem into a hub/switch. However as Malafus said, you already do have a router.

That's great news and thanks to you both for the replies.

As a matter of interest, would you happen to know where I might get a hub chaeply over the Holiday Weekend?

These days you're as well off to get a switch as a hub (most places will probably sell you a switch anyways if you look for a hub) as 10/100 switches are dirt cheap now. You can get things like this for absolutely peanuts on ebay, though since you want it over the weekend, you should probably try looking around your local pc world type places.

Got a 5 port 10/100 switch today from Peats in Parnell St. for €19.99 and it works perfectly.

The weird thing is, when I spoke to a techie from Eircom on the phone yesterday, he couldn't tell me if my modem had a built in router or not. Speaks volumes about that paticular organisation, doesn't it?

Anyway, I'm really grateful to you guys who replied and gave me the info I needed. Fair play to you all.
