Computer programmer is very different to upgrading/repairing computers etc. In fact, they are completely unrelated.

Are you trying to get a job? If so, in what area?

    ...

You can teach yourself programming. A fun and easy language is PHP. It is used for dynamic/complex websites. For example, boards.ie uses PHP.

There are lots of good books with names like PHP & MySQL. It's good to buy a book which incorporates both PHP and MySQL (a nice database) because it's likely you'll want to use a database at some stage in your programming.

Regarding operating systems, just buy the O'Reilly books on Linux, install Linux on an old computer, and play around with it. You can install Apache (a web server), MySQL, PHP, Perl, etc. on your Linux box and actually start your own server. It's a good way to learn.

Upgrading/reparing PC's is not something I've ever bothered with, so I can't give any pointers there I'm afraid.

Well it sounds to me that the kind of course you should do is computer systems management, not computer programming.

Carlow I.T do a 3 year computer systems management degree, if indeed you change your mind about the course having to be in Dublin, other than that nightcourses seem the best route for you, local VEC's have an abundance of computer related courses all around Ireland.

Regarding upgrading/fixing computers components, you learn that sort of thing by dealing with computers on a daily basis, it becomes relatively easy to change parts/diagnose problems with hardware after continuous use with computers, although if you're a beginner it wouldn't harm you to learn the basics (e.g. identifying components, component mainenance/care etc.).
