GTK+ mucked up, how to fix?

I (in retrospect unwisely) tried to upgrade gqview the other day to the most recent version. I got bogged down in two days of installations, removals, updates and cyclical dependency hell, with the end result that I now have no working GTK+ installation, and would like to wipe it all away and install a recent version in the most straightforward way possible. I'm using Mandrake 10, but neither urpmi nor apt4rpm recognise GTK+ as a package or can find the right installables.

I only installed apt the other day so am not very clued-in as to how it works.

I'm thinking at this stage I might be better off installing Mandriva 2005/2006 to upgrade my system (as opposed to wiping everything and installing fresh).
Is this likely to fix things, or cause more problems? Has anyone any tips for using apt to install GTK+ (at least version 3.6) ?
