So what about the whole tipping thing. I pretty much like My Uncle Miserly Mickey don't agree with it although I tend to do it begrudgingly anyway.
But Pighead these people are on terrible wages and rely on the tips to survive. There is a very good chance they'd die without the tips.
Yeah right.I hate tipping because it places the impetus on the customer, when it should be the establishment paying its employees a decent wage. Tipping is no longer about rewarding excellent service because you're expected to tip no matter how the waiter/waitress performs. We're made to feel guilty that they survive on tips.

Had an argument with Miss Piggy a while ago.We went for a lovely romantic dinner in town. First waiter was a lovely chap with grand curly hair but at some stage he disappeared and we had to stop another waiter with straight hair to take over, who turned out to be one of the worst waiters ever to have walked the earth. He kept forgetting about our order. The food wasmanky and made me want to vomit, but when it came time to pay the bill, Miss Piggy insisted i leave a tenner tip! i protested and pointed out how the food was ****e and the service was terrible and most importantly that I was the boss but got a dirty look from her and decided to leave it.
What do you think of the whole tipping thingy.

If I pay €18.95 for €4.50 worth of steak I reackon I've already covered everone's costs.

The practice of auomatically adding a service charge is a rip-off.
If you want €22.00 from me for a steak have the guts to say so.
    Don't pretend it's €18.95 then add service.

I only tip if the service is decent and I am more than generous if treated well.

If the sevice was not up to scratch I demand that the service charge be removed from the bill as is my legal right.

I appreciate that the wages are low but do the job properly to earn the tip.

Im not as bad as mr pink, but you wont get a tip off me for doing your job i.e just bringing my grub! But if it looks like they are trying to make you feel welcome, are polite and are trying to do a good job they will get something.
I even tipped a girl in eddie (empty your pockets)rockets last week, She looked after me so well it made the pain of paying that much for a burger fade away!!!:D

When I'm in a bar and I generally tip the lounge staff(providing they have served me), more out of empathy than anything as I was once a young lounge boy and know exactly how sh1t the job is.

In a restaurant, if the service has been good, the staff friendly, the food was nice etc. then I'll leave a tip.

I'm in ny/nj at the moment so I tip almost everywhere that's not take out. Also in bars, which I don't mind at all due to the fact that barmen will give you extra booze (if you're drinking spirits).

I also find that if you have a tipping culture, service staff will actually go out of their way to be curtious and helpful, something I've found wasn't too prevalent in Ireland.

Me tips 15% - mainly out of habit but sometimes out of social pressure.

    I'll tip for good service.

Bad service in restaurants is usually provided by Irish people these days though.. anyone notice that?

I really dont understand tipping taxi drivers.

Its up to the company to pay the wage, not the customer. They are doing their job and being paid for it. If they don't like the money they are on then they should get a different job. On the very rare occasion that someone really goes out of their way for me (ie. above and beyond the call of duty), I would consider tipping but that'd be it. This tipping because its expected is crap and I have no time for it. Other than that, I say **** 'em. You don’t get a tip in McDonalds do you! Mr Pink all the way!

EDIT: I suppose I should point out that I’m notorious among pizza delivery guys as a non-tipping tight c*nt. My response to that is: You’re doing your job, why the **** should I pay you extra??? What have you done to deserve a tip? You've walked to my door and said: You order a Pizza? Thats €x

It's usually the alcohol that tips taxi drivers ... that is if there is any money left at the end of the night.

Nor do I, but alot of the time I end up just telling them to round it off to an even figure i.e if the fare is €8.60 I'll just ask for a euro back(if I paid with €10),€11 back if I paid with €20 etc. I don't think it really consititutes tipping, more just me trying to cut down on the amount of small change I have.

I've never tipped someone for delivering food though, and never will tbh.

I don't generally tip, but that's cos I'm generally fairly broke. If the service is particularly good then I'll be sure to throw in an extra few quid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

If the service and food is good I will always tip about 10-15%.
Poor food and service doesn't deserve a tip even if it is expected.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,546 ✭✭✭Enii

I would never tip 10% or the like. I just round up. Like if the bill is 28, I'll leave 30 euro.

i'll occasionally tip for excellent service, which means doing over and above your job description (for which your employer pays you).

I never tip. I agree with Hagar the cost of food over here is insane in my opinion and if Im gonna pay that much for a meal then Im assuming the tip is included!! If restaurants can charge 22 quid for a steak then they can surely afford to pay the staff properly.
Only exception to this is the local chinese who are v reasonably priced, always give me a lovely table and give me a free fruit platter for desert I usualy give them a small tip

and here was me thinking i was gonna be original with my Mr Piink quote:rolleyes:

"I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job." Mr Pink, Reservoir Dogs

I tip when I feel like it and when I can afford it. I don't care about a few quid here and there tbh. It's more of a case of me not tipping when the service is poor than me tipping when it's good.

I think it's a habit you pick up when you are growing up. I grew up watching my dad always tip people who did their job well. Monkey see, monkey do and all that.

I used to work in a restaurant in town - in the kitchen - and the tips the waiters got were unreal! They were on minimum wage and used to give out yards if they didn’t get at least €120 per night
The chefs used to go mad in the kitchen because tips weren’t shared - not necessarily with them - would have been nice though - but with the porters who had **** jobs for absolute dirt pay. Their work was so heavy and unrelenting that they only ever lasted a few weeks…the ones that stayed did so through having no choice because of language barrier or because the job required no papers.

The waiters used to turn tables over so fast that the kitchen would be up the creek and tell them to slow it down but they never would and so rows used to break out all the time. Chefs would go on a go slow and waiters would be at the hatch screaming at the chefs. Ive seen filthy critters working in the kitchen and not much better in the dining room. To pay a huge amount of money for what used to be abused before it was sent out to the customer makes me of the mind that I prefer to eat at home if there is not a larger crowd of us. Ive seen too much.!

I never tip taxis! Why do people do this? I round it up to the nearest euro if its above 50c and I have te change….otherwise….naw……I don’t see the point. If your waiter spent the first 20 mins of the meal telling you what an arse the government had made of the country and how they ruined taxi drivers lives…would you tip him?!

    Tipping is cool.

Dont be stingey. If you have an extra bit of change after your done, just leave it there. I'd feel like a bit of scab putting it back in my pocket.

Dont do it cuz your expected to, just to be nice. If the person is blatantly rude and gives you sh!t service, then dont tip, but otherwise its good to leave a little something.

    Dave wrote:

    i second that!!

i was a waitress in a few differrent places, in one the tips were shared out among the waiters..sometimes we'd get 60euro but that'd be the max..in another place all tips were collected and shared among everyone (including the cleaner, dishwashers, chefs, managers and waiting staff) you might get 30euro a fortnight, so i wouldnt know what its like to be tipped heavily.

it really depends on the service but most times i would tip,but the thing that annoys me the most is service charge, how dare places stick a % charge on top of the cost of your food, its totally out of order imo, plus i know establishments that use the service charge to pay there staff, makes me sick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,331 ✭✭✭Keyzer

    Im a Mr Pink too....
Too many times have i received crap food that was microwaved str8 from the freezer, server by someone who has no interest in looking after the customer and charged a fortune....

    Ireland isnt America either..
Waiters/waitresses in America get paid bugger all and rely on tips more so than the majority of the unfriendly and rude people who work in restaurants in Ireland...

Im not asking for a song and dance, but if you do more than the average and the food is tasty then I will consider leaving a tip...
If you just do your job (which usually consists of throwing the plates at people and being completely unhelpful) , which you are getting paid for, then you get nowt from me....

I always tip. We were in Bennigans in Dundrum on Saturday, and even though the main course took around half an hour to come because of some problem in the kitchen we still tipped because the waiter gave us free drinks and was very apologetic.

That, and I was in a state of ecstacy in the knowledge that Bennigans has opened in Ireland

I would tip only in restaurants if it's good service or brill food. Other no, oh, in cabs sometimes...
