EDIT: its should actaully be lsass.exe instead of bass as i typed, it went so fast i reread the wrong name.sorry.

The problem: When the pc boots up, it gets as far when the mouse appears just before the names appear on the winxp login. then suddenly a message pops up.
    lsass.exe
There is not enough system resources or virtal memory to complete this process

or something alone those lines. The message appears for about 3 seconds then the pc restarts. I've tried going through all the usual option including all the option in safe boot but still the error appears and pc restarts. This is getting really annoying as there are files which are important to me on the pc so a format is not what i need right now and i'm quickly running outta ideas.

    Thanks for any input.

Try logging in in safe mode, then press the start button, then run, then type
msconfig. click the rightmost tab on the window that pops up. in the command column, check to see where bass.exe is located, and uncheck the box next to it.
    worth a shot

    P.S. :

use the F8 key to start Windows XP in Safe mode

    1. Restart the computer.
Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
    2. As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
    3. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.

    http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/bass/

    a game aparently
boot into recovery console, find bass.exe with the cd, dir commands and delete it, if its running as a service theres a command to list services and turn it off, cant remeber off the top of my head what it is

When did the problem start occurring i.e. did you install any new software, visit any dodgy warez sites. Sounds like a virus TBH, modern computers have a huge virtual memory repository (typically >1GB) so it must be eating up memory like a mutha*****.

problem started occuring about 2 weeks ago i'd say, been using crap backup pc since. its the familys pc so theres no warez or anyother nonsense on it that i know.

@pushpop: as i said in my original post i cant acess window main part only get to part before login screen, also as said i've tried all the safe modes but the errors also stops them from accessing to.

@angelofdeath yeah i saw that site, little info on net about so i thats whay i tried here. also just tried using the recovery console but cant find the file as could be stored area anywhere espec places i cant access using the rc. also check the services list and didn't see it there.

with my new found information about the process actually being lsass.exe i found this on the web
    Hello There

When I boot up my computer which is running windows XP home edition, Just before it gets to the log on screen I get error message "Not enough Virtual Memory or paging file quota available to complete this operation". Then it reboots and does the same again. On the heading of the error message box it says Erroe - lsass.exe. I can not change VM because I can not get into windows (even in safe mode). I have important documents on there. What do I do???

its my exact problem but theres no answer with it, i was hoping someone else might have seen it around before.

    also found:
    Logon
The XP boot process is not considered complete until a user has successfully logged onto the system. The process is begun by the WINLOGON.EXE file which is loaded as a service by the kernel and continued by the Local Security Authority (LSASS.EXE) which displays the logon dialog box.
This dialog box appears at approximately the time that the Services Subsystem starts the network service.

this is the time when that message kicks in so no way of bypassing it.

Go out and get the XP install cd, and install it. But make a new installation, not a reinstall because if u reinstall, every thin on ure hard drive is formatted ;)

If you are sure it is lsass.exe (lowercase L at the beginning) then it is an important part of the system. If it is a lowercase I then you have a virus. See below:

    Lsass (1)
    Lsass.exe

    (Microsoft)
Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003 only. LSASS is the Local Security Authentication Server. It verifies the validity of user logons to your PC/Server (in technical jargon : it generates the process that is responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service).

    Recommendation :
An integral part of the operating system, leave alone provided that its full path as shown in The Ultimate Troubleshooter is either C:\WinNT\System32\LSASS.exe (Windows 2000) or C:\Windows\System32\LSASS.exe (Windows XP/2003). If the path is anything else then you may have a virus.

    Isass
    isass.exe

    (???)
    You have the Backdoor.Futro virus.

Note – do not confuse this with LSASS which will most times show as “lsass” in your Task List where the first letter is in fact a lowercase “L” rather than an “i”.
