4-wire or 6-wire FireWire lead?

    Hi folks,

Could someone please identify the difference between a 4-wire and a 6-wire FireWire (aka IEEE1394) lead - apart from the obvious difference in the number of cores?

Is the 6-core lead capable of higher speeds, or more functionality (with two extra cores), or what is the arrangement?

I bought a FireWire lead recently for my MiniDV camcorder, having mislaid the original one during a house move. The camcorder is about 3 years old (Sony TRV-27), probably with the 400Mb/s speed FireWire interface, and I wasn't sure what type of lead to buy so I went for a 4-core. Only thing is I'm a little nervous about connecting it up coz I'd rather not blow the Shetlands out of the camcorder electronics, as you can well understand.....

You shouldn't really have anything to worry about. Very simply, the extra two lines are for carrying power. Rule of thumb is to examine your sockets and use an appropriate cable >>

    ave you done this?
