Have a Dell machine which had a password on the bios. Removed the battery for a couple of days and went back into the bios but the clock won't stop spinning. Even if I try to manually put in the time it won't. Changed the day and date but it still goes. Any suggestions?

Sorry..my head is spinning. It just keeps going up in time, you know if you are manually changing it and keep your finger on the left/right arrow on the keyboard. It as if this is happening but there are no keys pushed down on the keyboard. Restored to factory defaults, etc but it keeps going (the time that is). This also is causing the day/month to change.

try running antivirus and anti spyware on your pc! There could be something there! Also it that doesn't work reset your bois on the motherboard! It's a jumper on the mb so you may well need to refer to you mb manual. if neither of those suggestions work try a new battery and then if that doesn't help I reckon you'l have to format your pc!

Don't know what caused it but removed battery again for about 20 mins then put back in and viola!!! Might have something to do with the fact that I left it out for about 3 days first time, it may have caused some internal issue being this long without power.

sure the capacitors would store up electrical charge when it is unpluged and when it's unpluged the would start to discharge therefore provided a very small amount of electrical current the mb! Correct me if I am wrong!

yeah removing the cmos battery resets the bios therefore removing the bios password, but your windows password will still be there and laptop cmos' are usually pretty hard to get to anyway

Desktops tend to have a separate battery (watch type usually) and if you remove this AND unplug the mains overnight it should loose all settings (older machines only took a few minutes)

Because Laptops are so thievable their BIOS passwords can't be opened easily - some have hidden back doors to override the passwords , but IIRC Dell demand a reciept or fax with confirmation before they will give you the password for your laptop, and even then it doesnt always work in which case you are looking at a new motherboard !

Yeah, and for those who don't know, most desktop PC motherboards have a jumper you can set to instantly reset the bios, so you won't have to wait for ages.
Never have tried doing anything like this with a laptop.

Erm. That has to be the most retarded advice anyone on here has ever given. If you swap the jumper and swap it back it automatically cuts the power from the battery to the bios chip thus resetting everything back to factory settings. Removing the battery will also do this but... why in good god's name would you do these two things to at the same time which BOTH, SEPERATELY will do the same thing?

    The mind boggles.
