Hope this is the right forum but feel free to move it if its not.

I have a friend who has just moved to Strabane and is interested in getting Broadband. Anyone got any ideas as to the best packages available for either broadband only or BB/Tel package.

I know he was looking at an offer BT has where they are selling a PC at a discounted rate if he signs up with them. He is tempted mind you as he needs to upgrade that pre-historic thing he has.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks for that. I think he may opt for BT because of the cheap PC they are offering as part of the deal.
I see as a Dub you still stick with the old "Jack" :D

Something around 99% of N.Ireland is covered by ADSL Broadband. Heck I've even got 2MB on my connection here in the sticks, and almost everyone can get at least 512k. Strabane will be no different. Currently if you have broadband from a BT line the highest speed you can get is 2MB download though BT are trialling an expirement over in Britain for 8MB ADSL that if successful will see it being rolled out over here early next year (the upload speed will also increase as well) but of course, the maximum speed will depend on your distance from the exchange.

There's plenty of ISPs to choose from. The more popular ones are BT, Wanadoo, AOL, Tiscali, Pipex etc. though smaller players like Freedom2Surf and Plus.com are also proving popular. I'm not totally aware of this PC deal that BT seem to be offering, but reports that I've heard indicate that BT are a decent enough ISP.

Best bet is for the person to look at ADSL Guide at www.adslguide.org.uk
And to check that their phone line is capable of receiving ADSL broadband fire their phone number into www.bt.com/broadband

Thanks for that. I'll get him up here with me over the weekend and he can do a trawl through the list of ISP's and check the phone line etc.
he should have a better idea after that.

I lived in the midlands for a long time but both parents are from the northern half of the country (Donegal and Monaghan)

I use Plusnet. Cheap Uncapped and with a potential future dowstream bandwidth of 24 meg  but my cruddy phoneline limits me to 1 meg so Im a bit miffed that NC is managing 2 meg out in the sticks :(
