Finding Work - Please Help!

    Hey,

I've been looking for work for a couple of months now, and am getting as frustrated as hell!!

I've sifted through page after page after page of job websites, sending my CV off to anyone and everyone where I think I am even remotely qualified...but no joy.

I've been on to every agency I can find...but again, no joy. They seem to have the pick of the litter, and discard anyone who isn't a high earner...as soon s they hear i've no 3rd level, and have salary expectations of only €23k (was €26k...now considering walking around town with a sign hanging from my neck "Will work for food"). I can't stand agencies tbh..salesmen who don't really give a **** about you or finding you what you want...just meeting their quota, not their fault i suppose, but the agencies provide a crap service.

*deep breath* I needed that rant

    So here's my background:
I have 3 years work experience, 2 in marketing/sales and 1 as legal clerk.
All i'm looking for, and it seems pretty simple, is an office job. 9 - 5. I don't care if it's entry level or "some experience required".
Preferably in a advertising, marketing (no sales - or very little), Financial services (banking & insurance) ... or just about anywhere that offers a good career potential!!
I was earning €26k (but no real career), and am willing to go down to about €23k.
I'm really hard working, i have great references and i'm really determind/ambitious, and am doing a degree in marketing p/t ... yet for some reason i cant find work...what's going on??

My CV is well presented etc. & covers everything I want to put across, and I'm very good at interviews - confident, very specific, know what i'm talking about, impecably presented...

The only work i do find are these cold calling, direct marketing, % of wages put in a bond etc. scams ... waisting my time, claiming the job is one thing, get you to the interview, and it's something entirely different.

This is what has me as frustrated as hell!!

Can somebody please help. Do you know of any work going that would suit me? Is there anyone you can put me in contact with? Do you know any excellent Agencies? Or excelent reps that helped you that I could contact? Or even some general advice or encouragement would be some sort of consolation at this stage :(

    Thanks for reading. :)

Ok, i dont mean to rain on your parade, but marketing positions are difficult to get without relevant qualifications. I have a degree in media production and media management, and I am amazed I landed the job I have now, marketing mgr for an I.T company.
As for salary expectations, as far as I know, your only chance of scoring above the 25k mark without qualifications is in sales, or working your way up from admin level etc....

if you don't mind me asking, how old are you and where are you from?

    22, South Dublin.

I realise im not going to land a marketing manager job! But the fact that im studying it, and they can get me for cheap is an investment if you ask me...Getting a future degree holder in the relevant field, while training him with hands on experience on the job, you get him for dirt cheap, and by the time he gets the degree he is extremely qualified for the job, but they only have to pay me new graduate wages...

Also, I'm not only after marketing, but any entry level position.

Well you certainly would make a good sales person anyway! I know sales is a major pain in the ass, but its a good way into marketing, I built up some sales experience with an event guide magazine before I got this job, and I am fairly certain that it is what swung it for me.
I also run marketing and promotions for Gasworks, Frazers, this experience was looked upon favourably.

I am not sure if your interested in any kind of event management, but there is a lot of marketing and advertising involved, and the money is quite good.

If you are still in college why not get involved in organizing events? Get a bit of experience under your belt and then start the job hunt again!

How many years out of how many years of the degree have you competed and what sort of degree is it?

Well, sorry to sound unethical here, but I think it's time to put a Degree on your CV and possibly some fake work experience.

No one checks to see if you really have a Degree and most HR people will only check the references you give them (if they even bother to check at all.)

    ...

Most jobs, even the "difficult" ones, are easy enough when you are shown what to do.

Example: a labourer friend of mine is now a fund accountant. He knows nothing about funds...or accounting. However he says the job is a piece of piss and the employer demanded a Degree and a years experience. He just lied about it all and got the job... He's been there for a year a recently got a good bonus (i.e. good job!!)

The world is not an honest place so don't be afraid to play a little bit bad sometimes!!!

The first task is to sell yourself and if you are not being called to interview, then your CV simply isn't working. To be honest your own opinion of your CV and skills isn't worth much. You need to find someone who will be brutally honest, and then start working on the problem areas.

Its not an career area I know well, but if you want a 2nd opinion on the CV, PM me and I'll have a look for you.

no. i would never advocate that someone lie on a CV.

i would also suggest that your CV needs to be looked at.
if you have done the work you say you have, and you are not getting interviews, then its your CV.
post it up and im sure someone will have a look at it and give some advice.

and remove your own personal details from it first.

Sure, it's definitely wrong, but if it means you'll have an easier life with more money, it's worth doing IMO.

Kind of reminds me that episode of the Simpsons with Frank Grimes...

It's the kind of thing that can come back to haunt you.

The biggest issue in my eyes is, if you lied on a CV for a long term "serious" job and you get caught out (something big like claiming a degree you don't have or similar) then you could end up with an awful lot of hassle and a very bad reputation.

Small little details, no one really cares about them, but the big stuff? I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot barge pole. Then I've strong views on ethics in such matters.

I can understand if you were desperate. But its a double edged sword and could really come back to haunt you. Or not. :) Personally I think you get better results with a brutally honest and concise CV. You will stand out from the usual drivel, which try to avoid calling a spoon a spoon.
