My mate has done something to his PC and asked me to have a look but I can't work it out. He has IOL Broadband but when you click on Internet Explorer or Mozilla , it won't open any web page. The DSL light is greeen and to "open" IOL, you click on Broadband Icon and connect as opposed to always on. Having got frustrated he tried to reinstall Windows 2000 and has made a michael of his pc. The reinstallation has stuck and it says "setting up" and machine turns itself off and sets up again and gets stuck. Having looked at the system there seems to be 3 Windows 2000 (pro) operating systems loaded. 1st one is the one that is having problem with reinstallation, 2nd has little or nothing loaded and wont let you access internet by broadband ~ same problem as above and 3rd system allows access to NET by dialup but has some problem with pop ups about scanfix & regedit etc which is not been removed with ad aware. Any suggestions ? I feel guilty because I got him to upgrade from Win 98 to 2000 and he has said he has had problems since :o
Oh yeah PC is 3/4 years old. With all these problems and all the different operating systems, what is the easiest way to transfer files to other hard drive ? Thanks for help. I spend my life surfing on pc and know very little.

I think the solution to the initial problem is that you didn't change the way the PC connects to the web:
In Internet Explorer go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections tab
Make sure "never dial a connection" is selected.

Also sounds like you need to install a firewall. U can download one here:
    http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

Im not too sure what uv done with Win2k.

Was he one of IOL's earlier customers, one of the first?

The setup was that yes the DSL light was always on but you
still had to "dial up" to initiate a connection... used to only take a se cond or two.

With regards to the Win2k install, it looks like you or he have done a reinstall rather than a fresh install of windows 2000, and three boot-up entries have been entered into the MBR, if you do a full format of the hard disk and then install windows 2000 it should clear all the other installation settings.

He and I both had IOL for a good while. It has been working but whatever he did when you dial up connection it looks as if he is connected but can't get a web page. I originally checked his pc against mine and can find no difference in settings.

What is difference between fresh install and reinstall ? When you stick in disk, which option should be chosen ?
