I installed it and used it for a while. I dont like the way the tabs are above the function keys - wish you could change it!

I use Avant but only coz thats what Im used to. I love Firefox too, but Opera is a brilliant browser and has beaten Firefox for speed in most of the tests Ive seen.
I wonder what the new Internet Explorer is gonna be like.

Anyways - yeah Opera is a great browser and now its free.

One thing that fcuks me off about Opera is the pop down box on the address bar.

    Its still kool tho.

Opera is great! I'd probably use it IF there was no FX, I love FX, it's flexibility is unparalleled, sigh.... if I could only know how to write the extensions for it :(

Thats what I hate about it also,
I'm afraid I can't switch from Firefox to Opera as I'd miss my lovely collection of extentions far too much :D (31 extentions and counting).

I hate using Firefox if I don't have the likes of tabs prefs, adblock, customizegoogle etc

Is there an OpenInOpera one yet (and an OpenInFirefox one for Opera of course)

I tried Opera 8.5, render speeds were horrible for me compared to firefox

    wow cool! ty :)

I thought making extensions required extensive programming knowledge...

Using 8.5 for the last day. Don't use tabs yes, that's what I said so no worries there. What bugs me about the new version is that the cursor doesn't go to the address bar when it opens . Annoying as I've become quite used to opening opera and typing a URL straight away (particularly after hitting ^N to open a new window) without going near that nasty mouse. Perhaps it's something I tweaked last time and heven't this time but it's a tad annoying.

i dont like to install extensions. i use a lot of different computers between college and work and home so i like to have a standard interface. i prefer to get used to the standard UI than customise it to über handiness at home and have my head wrecked whenever i use a different computer

I use both - I like the way Opera remembers what tabs were open when you last closed it (yes, I'm sure that there's an FF plug in for this... actually, feel free to recommend one). However, it does have some niggly things, the lack of functionality such as is offered by the Flashblock and Adblock extensions in Mozilla is annoying, plus the web developer toolbar/js console/js debugger on Firefox are tools I can't live without - though having said that about Flash, it (Opera) can load Flash objects without causing my screen to flicker wildly as it does so, which Firefox, it seems, can't, whatever system I'm using.

The other thing I've noticed is that the Opera download manager is light years ahead of the one in FF - but then again, I think that's the weakest link in the chain as Firefox goes anyway (what gives with the default maximum of two concurrent downloads? That setting's been around since Netscape 2.0!!!). It does seem to have a slightly smaller memory footprint too, but I'm not convinced there's a noticeable performance differential...

By the way, did anyone else notice that the address autocomplete thingy on Yahoo! Mail doesn't work in Opera? I've seen a number of other, similar examples, but that's the only one that sticks in my mind right now.

    Just my 2c...

Recently switched to Opera 8.5 from Deerpark Beta (Firefox 1.5 Beta 1) after having gone through every single version of Firefox and nearly 10 years of IE before that :)

Still in two minds. The extensions make Firefox extremely adaptable, but I love the look and feel of Opera. Miss the "undo closed tab" function though, although I don't think I had that extension after upgrading to Deerpark?

Isn't that an industry standard - xpantispy ups the connections in IE and I'm sure there are similar tweaks for FF, (but teh FireFTP rox)

Get used to hitting F8 before you type the address...

Highlights the address without any nasty mouse moving

Cheers. I should have given it the time and checked to see what the opera equivalent of IE's F4 is. Not quite as good as it was but close and rather appreciated.

Opera has been my favourite for a long, long time. I was pretty pìssed off when they changed the style of the interface in Opera 7, but thanks to the nather nice skin and setup systems, you can still make it look like this:

    opera_setup.jpg

To be honest, I couldn't be arsed getting extensions for Firefox to mimick the Opera mouse-gestures and sessions functionality (being able to close 10 tabs at once and have them all re-open the next time you go looking for them is very handy). Since these all come as standard on Opera, I see no reason to change. As someone already pointed out, the download managed - in particular the right-click explorer menu functionality - its vastly superior also.

The only thing FF has over Opera in my experience is the adblock extension (which is a godsend) and better rss support. I find most RSS feeds just aren't picked up by opera, but then I only use it on about 3 sites anyway.
Oh and Opera asks far too often what cookies I want blocking when I've already told it before. Does give you a direct insight into exactly how ad-infested some sites are though.

I'd prefer both browsers to be less memory hungry though.

I think the way Firefox handles bookmarks is horrible. You can't set default sorting options, and when you open the bookmark menu, right click and choose sort by name, the menu disappears. You have to either repeat that process for every menu or open the equally useless Bookmark Manager and sort each menu individually.

For some reason, I just find it easier to use ctrl + L to jump to the address menu. Just another way of doing the same thing :)

"undo closed tab" in Opera is standard functionality: <CTRL>Z

    d'oh :o

Very happy now. Switched to Opera 8.5 in work as well. Mouse gestures, undo closed tab and automatic page reload are my favourite features atm

Managing bookmarks is cleaner in Opera compared to FF, Opera is much more stable than FF when opening lots of pages and when it does occasionally crash (it doesn't seem to like opening a PDF file in a new tab), when you restart it, it brings back all the pages that were open the last time

The same thing happened with FireFox until I got the PDF Download extension. It's actually quite cool, a window pops up when you unwittingly click on a PDF link and you can either view it as text, download it or view it in a new tab.

Why do the menus at the very top of each boards page appear behind the banner ad on Opera? How do I stop this from happening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 224 ✭✭the1andonly1

the only way I've found around this problem is to go into preferences (alt+p) and disable inline frames. though this messes up some other sites unfortunatly
